William BUTLER (c1555-?)

and Susanna WHITEMAN (c1560-?)

 

William Butler and Susanna Whiteman married on 1 July 1580 in Burwash, Sussex.

William Butler's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  A William Butler of Burwash left a will dated 24 February 1599/1660 and proved on 4 October 1600 in Lewes (I have not yet read this will).  He was buried on 28 May 1600 in Burwash.

Susanna Whiteman's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

 

William Butler and Susanna Whiteman had 5 known children:

  1. Abraham Butler was baptised on 21 October 1581 in Burwash.  He may have married in about 1606.  (He has his own page.)

  2. Susanna Butler was baptised on 11 October 1584 in Burwash.

  3. Thomas Butler was baptised on 21 November 1591 in Burwash.  He may have married Susan Tisehurst in 1622.  (They have their own page.)  Or he may have married Mary James married on 2 September 1628 in Brightling.

  4. George Butler was baptised on 10 February 1593 in Burwash.

  5. Jeremy Butler was baptised on 6 June 1596 and/or on 12 March 1597 in Burwash.

 

Given the gap between the baptisms of Susanna and Thomas, is it possible that mother Susanna died and William remarried?  Or might the first 2 children be the children of an elder William, and might a younger William have been the father of the 3 younger children?  A William Butler was baptised in Burwash in 1564.  (See below for more earlier Burwash Butlers.)

  2. Margaret Butler was buried on 4 November 1559 in Burwash.

  3. Mildred Butler married William Faireway on 19 February 1560/1 in Burwash.Joan Butler, widow married John Woodye on 1 October 1570 in Burwash.

  4. Constance Butler married Simon Dawe on 24 January 1573/4 in Burwash.

  5. George Butler was of Northiam when he left a will dated 2 May 1605 and proved on 21 May 1605 in Lewes.  He may have had the following children:

    1. Alicia Butler was baptised on 29 September 1581 in Burwash. 

    2. Titus Butler was baptised on 2 February 1583 in Northiam.  He married Abigail Jefferey on 27 September 1607 or 1609.  A Titus Butler of Burwash left a will dated 31 August 1615 and proved on 7 September 1615 in Lewes.  Abigail Butler was buried on 14 March 1613/4 in Burwash.  The burial register noted that she was the wife of [blank].

    3. Faythful Butler was baptised on 25 April 1593 in Northiam.  A Faithful Butler, a tailor of Burwash, left a will in 1623.  He was buried on 11 November 1623 in Burwash.

  6. Alice Butler was buried on 29 April 1584 in Burwash.

  7. Richard Butler was baptised on 10 March 1558/9 in Burwash, the son of Godridi Butler.  He was buried in Burwash on 11 November 1559, and the burial register noted that he was the son of Godfrey Butler.

  8. Paul Butler was baptised on 25 January 1560/1 in Burwash.  A Paul Butler of Northiam left a will dated 28 November 1590 and proved in Lewes.  He may have married Margaret Peter on 21 December 1585 in East Hoathly, Sussex.

    By Goddard Butler of Burwash, cowper, and Pawl Butler of Burwash, son of the said Goddard, to Richard Carpenter of Brightling, yeoman, of a messuage or tenement, kitchen and close of meadow in Brightling called Skynners, lying to the queen's highway leading from Brightling towards Roberts Bridge and to the land of Brightling (semitam de Brightling on the West, and to land of Walter Perchynd, N. and land of John Assheburneham, E. Signature, Pall Botteller, 2 tags, seals destroyed. Witnesses to dee and livery:- John Freeman, Walter Purchinge, Thomas Elliard, John Colman, George Colman.

  9. Debora Butler was baptised on 25 January 1560/1 in Burwash.  A Debora Butler was buried on 23 July 1561 in Burwash.

  10. William Butler was baptised on 3 December 1564 in Burwash.  A William Butler was buried on 9 December 1565 in Burwash.

  11. Elinora Butler was baptised on 3 December 1564 in Burwash.  She married John Fruen on 3 February 1583/4 in Burwash.

  12. Elizabeth Butler married Thomas Rootes on 27 October 1588 in Burwash.

  13. John Butler married Margaret Tycehurst on 15 October 1599 in Ashburnham.  A John Butler was buried on 2 September 1616 in Burwash and another was buried there on 12 September 1625.

    John Butler had the following children:

    1. Mary Butler was baptised on 27 December 1601 in Burwash.

    2. Margaret Butler was baptised on 8 January 1603 in Burwash and buried there on 10 January 1603/4.

    3. John Butler was baptised on 11 January 1605 in Burwash.

    4. Henry Butler was baptised on 8 April 1610 in Burwash and buried there on 26 August 1613.

  14. Henry Butler married Tamsin Meriweather on 11 February 1604/5 in Burwash.  The wife of Henry Butler was buried on 13 October 1645 in Burwash, but unfortunately her name was not recorded.

  15. Mary Butlor wife of John was buried on 26 May 1647 in Burwash.

  16. Margaret Butler married John Amy on 11 February 1612/3 in Salehurst.

  17. Thomas Butler had the following sons:

    1. Thomas Butler was baptised on 29 April 1621 in Ewhurst.

    2. William Butler was baptised on 14 June 1629 in Ewhurst.

  18. Thomas Boteler had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Botelor was baptised on 9 August 1629 in Winchelsea.

    2. Robert Boteler was baptised on 24 January 1631/2 in Winchelsea.

    3. John Boteler was baptised on 8 June 1634 in Winchelsea.

    4. Dorothy Boteler was baptised on 19 February 1636 in Winchelsea.

  19. Timothy Butler married Ann Sheather on 2 May 1662 in Hawkhurst, Kent.  He was a tailor and she a spinster and they were both of Northiam, Sussex.

  20. Benedicta Butler married Thomas Apse on 21 March 1665/6 in Burwash.

  21. John Butler, gent of Burwash married Mary Fagg on 26 February 1703/4 in Mountfield, Sussex.

    John and Mary may have had the following children:

    1. John Butler was baptised on 1 October 1704 in Burwash.

      John may have married Elizabeth.

      John and Elizabeth had the following children:

      1. Elizabeth Butler was baptised on 26 April 1727 in Burwash.

      2. Mary Butler was baptised on 4 December 1728 in Burwash.
