Nicholas Butler may have married sometime before or about 1562 and maybe in or around Brightling, Sussex.

Nicholas Butler, husbandman of Brightling, left a will dated 22 December 1572 and proved 19 February 1572/3 in Lewes.


Nicholas Butler had 4 known children:

  1. Margerie Butler was baptised on 8 November 1562 in Brightling.

  2. Goddard Butler was baptised on 30 April 1563 in Brightling.  A Goddard Butler of Burwash, left a will dated 7 October 1584 and proved 14 February 1588 in Lewes, and he was buried on 27 October 1558 in Burwash.  Where they one and the same?  Or might they have been uncle and nephew?

  3. Isake Butler was baptised on 7 August 1566 in Brightling.

  4. John Butler was baptised on 8 May 1569 in Brightling.

    John may have had the following children:

    1. Anne Butler was baptised on 2 May 1596 in Brightling.  She may have married Daniel Harman on 16 February 1617/8 in Salehurst.

    2. Nicholas Butler was baptised on 18 May 1600 in Brightling.

    3. Thomas Butler was baptised on 24 November 1604 in Brightling.  He may have died about or before 1636.

      Thomas may have married Mary James on 2 September 1628 in Brightling.

      Thomas and Mary had the following children:

      1. Elizabeth Butler was baptised on 24 August 1629 in Brightling.

      2. Mary Butler was baptised on 14 November 1630 in Brightling.  She may have married George Wates on 21 March 1653/4 in Brightling.  He was then of Burwash.

      3. Sarah Butler was baptised on 18 January 1634/5 in Brightling. 

    4. Rejoyce Butler was baptised on 20 September 1607 in Brightling.

Recites: 40 mortgage, TB to EP (payable at house of William Peckham brother of EP in Salehurst), 27 Oct 1657; endorsed: receipt by Edward Braban for interest, 1 Nov 1662; Maynards Land W: William Peckham, Abraham Bennet, Thomas Peckham


Banns of marriage between John Bulter, a carpenter from Salehurst and Ann Tampkin were published in Rolvenden in March 1658/9.
