John BURTENSHAW (1578-1653)

and Mary WHEELER (c1594-1645)

John Burtenshaw and Mary Wheeler were my 10x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 20 November 1615 in Cuckfield, Sussex

John Burtenshaw was baptised on 26 January 1577/8 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 257 Richard Burtenshaw (c1548-?) and 5 257 Alice Guillum.  He was buried on 8 November 1653 in Cuckfield.   The burial register records that John was "the Elder of Misbrookes".

Mary Wheeler may have been born about 1594.  She may have been buried on 20 September 1645 in Cuckfield, as the wife of John Burtenshaw (her forename was not recorded in the burial register).

John Burtenshaw and Mary Wheeler had 3 known children:

  1. Drue Burtenshaw was baptised on 30 March 1617 in Cuckfield.

Drew married Mary Carry on 17 January 1638/8 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.

  2. Dorothy Burtenshaw was baptised on 26 December 1619 in Cuckfield.

Dorothy may have married Henry Burtenshaw on 1 October 1638 in Wivelsfield, Sussex.  Their surname was then spelt Burtenshare.

  3. Mary Burtenshaw, my 9x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 15 December 1622 in Cuckfield.  She married 5 255 John Elsey in 1641.  (They have their own page.)
