William Burchell
married twice, firstly to
Sarah Laker on 5 May 1799 in Billingshurst, Sussex. The witnesses
to their marriage were William Laker and James Champion.
William then married
Elizabeth Norris
by banns on 1 July 1815 at the parish church
of Shipley, with the consent of her parents. He was a widower of
Billingshurst and signed his name. She was a spinster of Shipley and
made her X mark. The witnesses were
George Bishop
and
Ann Bishop
who both signed their names. (They were not my direct ancestors.
Elizabeth was the sister of my 3x Great Grandmother,
Susan
Norris.)
William Burchell was baptised on 11
April 1779 in Billingshurst. He was the son of John Burchell
and Sarah Holder. He was a carpenter. He died
aged 70 years and was buried on 11 January 1850 in Pulborough, Sussex.
On 16 January 1790 a Settlement certificate was issued to John
Burchell, his wife Sarah and their 2 children, 6
year old Mary Burchell and 11 year old William
Burchell, from Billingshurst to Pulborough, or vice versa.
Sarah Laker was baptised on 18 January 1781 in Billingshurst.
She was the daughter of William Laker and Elizabeth Williams.
She was buried on 19 May 1811 in Billingshurst. The burial register
recorded her name as Sarah Burchall.
Elizabeth Norris was baptised on 8
June 1800 in Billingshurst, but she may have been born 2 years earlier.
She was the fourth daughter and fifth child of
Richard
Norris (1755-1826) and
Hannah
Scutt (1769-1849). She died aged 83 years and her death was
been registered in the first quarter of 1878 in the Steyning registration
district.
When the 1851 census was recorded, Elizabeth Burchell was a
52 year old widow and pauper charwoman living in Pulborough along with 3 of
her children (Jane, Morris and Elizabeth).
The 1861 census records that 64 year old Elizabeth Giles
was living with her 67 year old husband, Edward Giles,
in a Cottage in the hamlet of Rackham within the parish of Amberly,
Sussex. Edward was an agricultural labourer and had been born in
Pulborough. Also with them on census night were 2 of Elizabeth's
children, Maurice Burchell and Elizabeth Burchell.

In 1871, Elizabeth Giles was a 75 year old widow and
housekeeper, living at 12 Freehold Terrace in Preston near Brighton.
Edward Giles was baptised on 2 August 1791 in Pulborough
and was the son of James Giles and Deborah Lickford.
He died aged 75 years in the third quarter of 1866 in the
Thakeham registration district. Edward had previously married
Sarah Harding by banns on 13 October 1818 in Pulborough. He
was then a bachelor and she a widow. The witnesses to their marriage
were Sarah Overington and John Giles.
Edward's daughter Ellen Giles married John Doick
in 1846 and their son Thomas Doick married
Mary Ann Burchell
in 1891.
William Burchell and Sarah Laker had 5 known

Sarah Burchall was baptised on 16 ? 1799 in Billingshurst.
Sarah married twice, firstly to William Jupp by banns
on 20 May 1822 in Pulborough. She was then a spinster and he a
bachelor and they were both of Pulborough. The witnesses to their
marriage were William Burchell and James
Overington.
As Sarah Jupp, widow aged 51
years, she married Luke Wady by banns on 22 February
1851 in Billingshurst. He was a 48 year old widower and carpenter.
Their fathers were named as William Wady and
William Burchell who were both carpenters. The witnesses
to their marriage were Joseph Kensett and
Elizabeth Caffin.

William Burchall was baptised on 4 October 1801 in Billingshurst.
He died aged 61 years and was buried on 2 September 1863 in Billingshurst.
William married Lucy Hayler by banns on 24 February 1827 in
Pulborough, Sussex. They were both then said to be of Pulborough.
The witnesses to their marriage were Elizabeth Hayler and Joseph
Kensett.
Lucy died aged 71 years and was buried on 7 June 1873 in Billingshurst.
William and Lucy had the following children:

Sarah Burchell was baptised on 30 August 1829 in Billingshurst.
It was noted in the baptism register that her father was a carpenter.
On 13 May 1850 Sarah and her soon to be husband were a witnesss to the
marriage of George Greenfield and Harriet Hard.
Sarah married George Hard by banns on 15 June
1850 in Billingshurst. She was a 21 year old spinster and he was a
26 year old bachelor and labourer. Their fathers were named as
Edward Hard a labourer and William Burchell
a carpenter. The witnesses to their marriage were George
Greenfield, Harriet Greenfield and
Mary Greenfield.

Henry Burchell was baptised on 18 March 1832 in Billingshurst.
Another Henry Burchell was baptised on 20 February 1831
in Billingshurst, the son of Henry Burchell and
Mary Ann Scutt. Yet another
Henry Burchell was baptised on 14 March 1830 in Wisborough
Green, the son of Edward Burchell and Esther
Overington.
Henry married Mary Evershed by banns on 23 February
1860 in Billingshurst. He was then a 28 year old bachelor and
carpenter. She was a 21 year old spinster. Their fathers
were named as William Burchell a carpenter and
William Evershed a labourer. The witnesses to their
marriage were Thomas Evershed and Thomas Baker.

Alfred Burchell was baptised on 14 December 1834 in
Billingshurst.

Billingshurst, the son of Henry Burchell and Elizabeth Wenseley,
and married Esther Overington in 1829.

was a carpenter. He married twice, firstly to
Ann Etheridge in
1839 and then to Esther

Billingshurst, on the same day as her cousin Ann Norris.

Billingshurst. Did he marry Ellen Greenfield on 21 August
1853 in Southwick?

was baptised on 16 September 1821
in Billingshurst.
Caroline had an illegitimate son:

William Burchell was baptised on 27 December 1846 in
Billingshurst. In 1851 he was 5 years old and living with his
mother and step father in the home of his Uncle Norris Burchell.
Caroline married Daniel Bungard on 15
April 1850 in Goring.
Daniel was baptised on 28 November 1813 in Goring and was the son of
Daniel Bungard and Elizabeth Wisdom.
The 1851 census records the couple together with her son were living at Jupps in Goring with the family of Caroline's
brother Norris. Daniel was then a 39 year old agricultural
labourer and Caroline was 29.

James Burchall
was baptised on 25 July 1824 in
Billingshurst.
James married Mary Ann Linfield by
banns on 12 December 1846 in Pulborough. He was then a 23 bachelor
and labourer of Pulborough. She was a 25 year old spinster of
Pulborough. They both made their X marks. The witnesses were
Norris Burchell and Caroline Burchell who both signed their
names.
Mary Ann was baptised on 10 February 1822
in Billingshurst and was the daughter of Robert Linfield
(1789-1869) and Rebecca Jayle (c1797-1847).
James and Mary Ann had 2 known children:

Mary Ann Burchell was born about 1851 in Brighton. She
married Robert Frederick Chapman in West Ham, London.

Rhoda Burchell was born on 23
February 1856 in Fishersgate, Sussex. She died in 1891.
Rhoda married Thomas James Ridpath in 1870.
Thomas was born in 1851 in West Ham and died in 1920.
Thomas and Rhoda had 6 children:

Thomas James Ridpath was born in 1874 in West Ham, Essex.
He died in Brighton in 1943.

Louisa Elizabeth Ridpath was born on 29 December 1876 in West Ham.
She died on 20 August 1951. She married Sydney Howard
Lawrence in the second quarter of 1898 in Brighton. Sydney
was born in the first quarter of 1871.

Charles Frederick Ridpath was born on 19 September 1879 in
Hove, Sussex. He died in 1973. Charles married Beatrice
Holden on 22 February 1902 in Brighton.

Archer John Ridpath was born on 26 February 1884 in Hove.
He died in 1918 as a result of wounds suffered during WW1.

William Henry Ridpath was born on 31 December 1885 in Hove.

Arthur George Ridpath was
born on 12 June 1888 in Hove. He died on 10 June 1952 in Brighton.
Arthur married
Audry Eves on 24 June 1915 in Albourne, Sussex. Audry
was the daughter of
Herbert Francis Eves (1856-1934) and
Annie Martha Allfrey (1865-1929). As Arthur was only 2
years old when his mother died, his elder sister Lousia was largely
responsible for his upbringing and Arthur and his son thought the
world of her. Arthur was very close pals with Sydney Howard
Kimberly Lawrence, son of Arthur's sister Louisa.
Mary Burchell
was baptised on 15 April 1827 in
Billingshurst.
Mary may have married
John Doick by banns on 26
July 1847 in Pulborough. He was a then a 25 year old bachelor and
labourer and she was a 23 year old spinster. Their fathers names
were recorded as James Doick a labourer and William Burchell
a carpenter. The witnesses to the marriage were
Ruth Willard and
Walter Doick.
John was baptised on 30 June 1822 in Pulborough and was the son of
James Dowick
(1783-1853) and
Jane Worner
(1790-1873).
Walter Burchell was baptised on 8
June 1828 in Billingshurst. He married
Frances Standen by banns on 5 August 1848 in Pulborough.
Walter was a 21 year old bachelor and
labourer. Frances was a 22 year old spinster. Their father's
were named as William Burchel a carpenter and
Thomas Standen a labourer. The witnesses were Charles
Standen and Harriet Standen.
Ann Burchell was
baptised on 18 September 1830 in Billingshurst.
Rhoda Burchell
was baptised on 3 June 1832 in
Billingshurst. She was buried on 5 March 1851 in Pulborough.
Jane Burchell
was baptised on 8 June 1834 in
Billingshurst. She was 16 years old in 1851 and living with her
mother in Pulborough.
Eliza Burchell
was baptised on 1 May 1836 in
Billingshurst. It was noted in the baptism register that her father
was a carpenter from Adversane. Did she marry Thomas Henry Gibbs
on 3 September 1853 in Pulborough? Eliza was then said to be a 19
year old spinster and servant. Thomas was a 23 year old bachelor and
labourer. Their fathers were named as John Gibbs a labourer
and William Burchell a carpenter. The witnesses to their
marriage were Jesse Lillywhite and Ann Burchell.
Maurice Burchell
was baptised on 6 May 1838 in
Billingshurst. The baptism register recorded that he was his
father's 17th child. He died in 1863. He was 13 years old in 1851 and living with his
mother. In 1861 he was a 22 year old agricultural labourer living
with his mother and step father in Rackham.
Maurice married Mary Ann West on 21
September 1861 in Amberley.
Mary Ann was born in 1838 and died in 1910. She was the daughter
of John West (1815-1895) and Sarah Blackman
(1821-1876).
Maurice and Mary Ann had 2 children:

Jane Burchell was born in 1862.

Richard Burchell was born in 1864. He married
Eleanor Goldsmith.
Elizabeth Burchell
was baptised on 31 May 1840 in
Billingshurst. The baptism register recorded that she was her
father's 18th child, and that he was a carpenter from Pulborough.
She was 12 years old in 1851 and living with her mother. In 1861
she was a 20 years old and living with her mother and step father.
