William BURCHALL (c1645-?)

and Jane MITCHELL (c1650-?)

 

William Burchall and Jane Mitchell may have been my 8x Great Grandparents.  They married by licence on 25 January 1671/2 at the parish church of St. Marys in Billingshurst, Sussex.  They were both then said to be of Billingshurst.  The Sussex marriage index also records that a marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester in 1675 to William Burchatt and Elizabeth Bursby, but unfortunately no further details were given, nor was their marriage recorded in the index.

William Burchall's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  A William Burchfold was born on 25 November 1653 and baptised on 25 November 1653 in Billinghurst, the son of William Burchfold.

The Billingshurst burial register records the following:

18 June 1692, William Burchall a husbandman from Hadfold Haven

25 April 1694, William Burchall, senior, a husbandman

17 August 1696, William Burchall a husbandman

Jane Mitchell's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  A Jane Michell was baptised on 12 February 1650/1 in Horsham, Sussex, the daughter of Thomas Michell and Mary.  Another Jane Mitchell was baptised on 17 June 1642 in Warnham, Sussex, the daughter of Richard Mitchell.

What became of Jane?  Did she remarry in 1694 or was she buried in 1697?  (More unraveling still to do.)  And which William did she marry in the first place?

Jane Burchall, widow married John Lowicke on 13 December 1694 in Billingshurst.

Jane Burchall, widow was buried on 4 March 1696/7 in Billingshurst.

 

William Burchall and Jane Mitchell may have had the following children:

  1. Mary Burchell was baptised on 23 March 1672/3 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register only records her father's name and he was said to be William Burchell, junior.

  2. Elizabeth Burchall was baptised on 7 February 1674/5 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register only records her father's name and he was said to be William Burchell, junior.  She probably died as an infant.

  3. Elizabeth Burchell was baptised on 7 December 1676 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register only records her father's name and he was said to be William Burchell, junior.  She was buried on 8 December 1676 in Billingshurst and the register again noted that her father was William Burchell, junior.

  4. Jane Burchall, my 7x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 24 January 1676/7 in Billingshurst.  Only her father was named in the baptism register.  She married Thomas King in 1701.  (They have their own page.)  Given that Elizabeth was baptised less than 2 months before, were they both part of the same family?  Or had Elizabeth been baptised late?  I am a bit concerned that in some entries the father is referred to as junior, but not in others.  Was this because there were 2 fathers named William having children baptised in Billingshurst at the same time?

  5. Anne Burchall was baptised on 14 December 1679 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register only records her father's name and he was said to be William Burchell, junior.

  6. Thomas Burchall was baptised on 18 April 1681 in Billingshurst.  Only his father was named in the baptism register.

  7. Sarah Burchell was baptised on 22 December 1682 in Billingshurst.  Only her father was named in the baptism register.

  8. Susanna Burchall was baptised on 15 September 1685 in Billingshurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She may have married John Compton by banns on 26 April 1706 in Wisborough Green.  She was from Billingshurst and he was of Rudgwick.

  9. A still born child of William Burchall was buried on 8 February 1686/7 in Billingshurst.

  10. William Burchall was baptised on 13 March 1688/9 in Billingshurst.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  He was buried on 13 June 1689 in Billingshurst and it was noted that he was the son of William Burchall.

  11. Ruth Burchall was baptised on 11 July 1690 in Billingshurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She married Thomas Vaughan on 19 November 1709 in Slinfold, Sussex.  She was then of Slinfold and he was of Rusper.

  12. William Burchall was baptised on 21 December 1696 in Billingshurst.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  13. Ann Burchall was baptised on 1 September 1700 in Billingshurst, the daughter of William Burchall, a labourer.

 

I'm fairly sure that not all the above children are part of the same family.
