Thomas BURCHALL (c1640-?)

and Martha OULDER (1640-1727)

Thomas Burchall and Martha Oulder married on 25 October 1666 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  They were both then of Billingshurst.

Thomas Burchfould may have been baptised on 12 April 1642 the son of Thomas Burchfould and Agnes Tribe, or on 30 April 1643, the son of Richard Burchfould and Ann Champion.  Both baptisms took place in Billingshurst.  The Billingshurst burial register between 1631 and 1658 is missing.  Thomas Burchell, senior was buried on 29 March 1670 in Billingshurst - might he have been the father of the 1642 Thomas and could this imply that it was 1642 Thomas who married Martha?  A Thomas Burchal was buried on 19 July 1701 in Billingshurst.  He was a labourer.  Might this burial have been of Martha's husband?

Martha Older was baptised on 12 April 1640 in Billingshurst.  She was the daughter of Henry Oulder and Agnis TobettMartha Burchal, widow, was buried on 30 April 1727 in Billingshurst.

Thomas Burchall and Martha Oulder may have had the following children:

  1. Susanna Burchall was baptised on 18 August 1667 in Billingshurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  Might she have married James Older on 25 June 1702 in Shipley, Sussex?

  2. Mary Burchell was baptised on 10 January 1670/1 in Billingshurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  3. Sarah Burchall was baptised on 4 May 1673 in Billingshurst and buried there on 29 April 1675.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism and burial register.

  4. Anna Burchall was baptised on 18 April 1675 in Billingshurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  5. Judith Burchell was baptised on 30 December 1676 in Billingshurst.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  6. Thomas Burchall was baptised on 20 April 1679 in Billingshurst.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

As Thomas Burchel he may have married Elizabeth Harman on 10 June 1701 in Billingshurst.

The wife of Thomas Burchal was buried on 14 June 1735 in Billingshurst.

Thomas Burchal, senior was buried on 18 September 1735 in Billingshurs

    They had the following son:

    1. William Burchet was baptised on 25 March 1708 in Billingshurst.  His parents were named as Thomas and Elizabeth.

But, he or another Thomas may have married Mary.  No possibly marriage for them appears in the Sussex marriage index.  They had the following children:

    1. Thomas Burchal was baptised on 6 February 1705/6 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that his father was a husbandman from Pamers.  His mother's name was not recorded in the baptism register.

Thomas may have married Mary Mate on 10 December 1730 in Billingshurst.  They were both of Billingshurst.

Thomas and Mary had the following children:

      1. John Burchal was baptised on 27 December 1733 in Billingshurst.  Both his parents names were noted in the baptism register.  He was buried as John Burchall son of Thomas and Mary on 27 June 1739 in Billingshurst.

      2. James Burchell was baptised 2 June 1738 in Billingshurst.  Both his parents names were noted in the baptism register.  Did he marry Mary Sheppard by banns on 14 February 1765 in Slaugham?  The were both then of Slaugham.  The witnesses to the marriage were John Tullet and Charles Colven.

      3. Lucy Burchall was baptised on 10 February 1741 in Billingshurst.  Both her parents names were noted in the baptism register.  Lucy married John Johnson by banns on 3 May 1762 in Billingshurst.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Burchall and Henry Spratt.

      4. John Burchall was born on 22 November 1744 and baptised on 25 November 1744 in Billingshurst.  Both his parents names were noted in the baptism register.  He died aged 77 years and was buried on 24 December 1821 in Billingshurst.  He may have married Sarah Holder by banns on 24 May 1767 in Pulborough.  They were both then of Pulborough.  The witnesses to their marriage were Daniel Searle and John Johnson.  A Sarah Burchell aged 79 years was buried on 21 January 1822 in Billingshurst.

      5. Sarah Burchell was baptised on 10 June 1750 in Billingshurst.  Both her parents names were noted in the baptism register.  She may have married Edmund Johnson on 17 May 1767 in Billingshurst.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Puttock and John Caunall (as per a transcript of the parish register) or J. Garmalt (as per the Sussex marriage index).

    2. John Burcher was baptised on 17 July 1707 in Billingshurst.  His parents were named as Thomas and Mary in the baptism register which also noted that his father was a yeoman from Palmers.

    3. Richard Burcher was baptised on 20 ** 1709 in Billingshurst.  His parents were named as Thomas and Mary from Palmers.

    4. Ann Burchal was baptised on 10 September 1710 in Billingshurst.  Her parents were named as Thomas and Mary.  Might she have married Richard Naldrett on 13 February 1732/3 in Billingshurst?  She was then said to have been of Wisborough Green and he was of Billingshurst.  Or did she marry John Woods on 23 October 1733 in Billingshurst?  She was of Billingshurst and he of Kirdford.

The following children were also said to have been the children of Thomas, but no mother's name was mentioned in the baptism register.  However, as Martha was born in 1640, it would seem unlikely she was the mother of the following.  The Sussex marriage index does not record the marriage of a Thomas Burch***** between that of Thomas and Martha in 1666 and of Thomas and Elizabeth in 1701.  Nor can I see a marriage in the Surrey IGI.

  1. John Burchall was baptised on 22 November 1684 in Billingshurst.

  2. Abigail Burchall was baptised on 7 February 1685/6 in Billingshurst.

  3. Avis Burchall was baptised on 20 July 1688 in Billingshurst.  She married Thomas Jenner by banns on 29 March 1714 in Billingshurst.  She was then said to be of Cranly (i.e. Cranleigh, Surrey)

  4. Daniel Burchall was baptised on 16 April 1690 in Billingshurst.

  5. Sarah Burchall was baptised on 28 February 1691/2 in Billingshurst.

  6. Roger Burchall was baptised on 25 August 1695 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted his father was a was father was a husbandman.  As Roger Burcher might he have married Mary Hide on 1 May 1723 in Angmering, Sussex?

  7. William Burchall was baptised on 22 May 1698 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer.  Might he have married Susan Furlonger on 5 August 1726 in Wisborough Green.  He was of Billingshurst and she of Wisborough Green.

  8. Philippa Burchal was baptised on 2 February 1700/1 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that his father was a husbandman.  As Phyllis Burchell she may have married George Naldret on 14 February 1726/7 in Rudgwick.

  9. John Burchal was baptised on 2 February 1702/3 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that his father was a husbandman and he was from by Kettles Bridge.

  10. Simon Burchal was baptised on 29 April 1703 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer from on the hill.  Simon may have married Barbara Parker on 1 May 1729 in Rudgwick.  He was then of Billingshurst and she of Rudgwick.

A Thomas Burchal, junior was buried on 26 June 1718 in Billingshurst.  As it was mentioned he was junior, I assume his father was also named Thomas and was still alive.  I also assume junior was also an adult, otherwise I would have thought the burial register would have said "son of".  Might he have been born before 1700?

Thomas Burchall was buried on 3 September 1769 in Billingshurst.

Thomas Burchall aged 82 was buried on 10 February 1814 in Billingshurst, therefore, born about 1732.  Might he have been the Thomas who married Elizabeth Butcher by banns on 6 May 1763 in Billingshurst?  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Puttock and William Streater.  I have checked a transcript of the Billingshurst baptism register and couldn't find his baptism circa 1732.  Might he have been the son of Thomas Burchall and Mary Mate?
