Norris Burchell married twice,
Ann Etheridge by banns on 25 May 1839 in Billingshurst Sussex. He was
then aged 22, a bachelor and a carpenter of Billingshurst. She was
aged 21 and a spinster of Pulborough. Her father's name was not
recorded on the marriage certificate. The witnesses were Richard
Norris, Harriott Daughtry and Caroline Burchall.
They all signed their names.
As a widower Norris married Esther Greenfield on 30 April 1853 in
Southwick, Sussex. (They were not my direct ancestors.
Norris was the nephew of my 3x Great Grandmother,
was baptised on 27 October 1816 in
Billingshurst, Sussex. He was the son of William Burchell
(1779-1850) and Elizabeth Norris (c1798-?).
It was noted in the baptism register that his father
was a carpenter. He died aged 85 years and his death was register in
the first quarter of 1902 in the Chichester registration district.
Ann Etheridge was baptised on 30 May 1819 in Billingshurst,
Sussex. She was the illegitimate daughter of Ann Etheridge,
who was from Dorking, Surrey. She died between 1849 and 1851.
Her youngest child was baptised in Upper Beeding, but Ann does not seem
to have been buried there. Her death was probably registered in
the first quarter of 1851 in the Worthing registration district.
Esther Greenfield was baptised on 24 June 1830 in Pulborough,
Sussex. She was the daughter of
John Greenfield and Sarah Ruff. She may have died aged
56 years and her death may have been registered in the third quarter of
1886 in the Lewes registration district.
In 1841 the family were living at Pratts in Billingshurst. The 1851
census records that 34 year old Narriss Burchall was a
widower and carpenter and was living at Jupps in Goring, Sussex, along
with his 5 children. Also with the family on census night was
brother-in-law Daniel Bungard, sister Caroline
Bungard and nephew William Burchell aged 5. In 1881 the family were living at 7 Belgrave
Square in Hove and Norris, or Morris Burchell as he was recorded in
the census, was a carpenter.

Ann Etheridge had 5 known children:
Sarah Burchell was baptised on 29 September 1839 in
Billingshurst. It was noted in the baptism register that her
father was a carpenter. In 1851 she was an 11 year old scholar.
Peter Burchell was baptised on 19 December 1841 in Billingshurst.
He was a 9 year old scholar in 1851.
Elizabeth Burchell was baptised on 17 March 1844 in Pulborough.
She was a 7 year old scholar in 1851.
Norris Burchell was baptised on 7 June 1846 in Pulborough.
In 1851 he was 5 years old.
Esther Hide on 16 September 1866 in Portslade.
He was then aged 20 and she was 24.
Esther was baptised on 10 April
1842 in Southwick and was the daughter of John Hide and Sarah.
In 1881 the family were living at Pleasant Place, Lewes and Norris
was a bricklayer.
The couple had 5 known children:
Sarah Ann Burchell was baptised on 5 March 1871 at St. Johns in
Norris Burchell was born about 1873 in Brighton.
Elizabeth Burchell was born about 1876 in Lewes.
William Burchell was born about 1878 in Lewes.
Jesse Burchell was born in 1880 in Lewes. He was 8 months
old when the 1881 census was recorded.
Jesse Burchall was baptised on 4 February 1849 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.
The baptism register notes that his father was a carpenter.
At the time of the 1851 census he was 2 years old.
Norris Burchell and Esther Greenfield had 7 known children:
Edwin Saron Burchell was baptised on 14 September 1856 in
Pulborough. As Edwin Sarson Burchell he married in the
fourth quarter of 1883 in Brighton. I have been unable to identify
him in the 1881 census.
Mary Ann Burchall was baptised on 19 April 1857 in Pulborough.
George Burchell was baptised on 10 April 1859 in Pulborough.
Rebekah Burchell was baptised on 20 January 1861 in Pulborough.
Ellen Burchell was born about 1868 in Walberton, Sussex.
Alice Mary Burchell was baptised on 21 November 1869 in
Frederick Burchell was born about 1876 in Ditchling, Sussex.
