James BURCHELL (1767-1801)

and Mary MIRIAM (1771-?)

James Burchell and Mary Meryam married by banns on 15 October 1790 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  He was from Billingshurst and Mary from Pulborough.  The witnesses to their marriage were Mark Meryam, Charlotte Clement and Hawkins Evans.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Mary was the neice of my 5x great grandmother, Hannah Miriam.)

James Burchall may have been baptised on 20 September 1767 in Billingshurst, Sussex, and have been the son of John Burchall and Sarah Holder.  He may have been buried on 30 October 1801 in Pulborough, but unfortunately the burial register only records his name and no other identification informaton.  Another James Burchall was baptised 10 May 1767 in Pulborough, Sussex, the son of James Burchall and Mary Sheppard, but he may have married Elizabeth Chambers by banns on 23 July 1788 in Goring, Sussex.  He was said to be of Pulborough.

Mary Miriam was baptised on 13 October 1771 in Pulborough, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Mark Miriam (1747-1826) and Parnel Humphrey (1738-1811).

As a widow, Mary Burchell married Bray Williams, widower, by banns on 1 May 1804 in Pulborough.  They were both of Pulborough.

Bray Williams was baptised on 29 June 1756 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.  He was the son of William Williams and Sarah.  Bray had previously married Lydia Matthews by banns on 13 May 1784 in Pulborough.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Pulborough.  The witnesses to their marriage were Sarah Kinchett and Daniel Searle.

James Burchell and Mary Miriam had 4 known children:

  1. James Burchell was baptised on 25 August 1793 in Pulborough.

  2. John Burchell was baptised on 26 June 1796 in Pulborough.

  3. William Burchell was baptised on 13 July 1800 in Pulborough.

  4. Thomas Burchell was baptised on 20 December 1801 in Pulborough.
