Henry BURCHELL
(1806-1875)
and Mary Ann SCUTT (1809-1898)

Henry Burchell and Mary Ann Scutt married by banns
on 20 October 1827 in West Chiltington, Sussex. They were both then of
West Chiltington. The witnesses to their marriage were Mary
Burchell and James Edmunds.
(They were not my direct ancestors.)
Henry Burchall was baptised on 27 July 1806 in
Billingshurst, Sussex. He was the son of
Henry Burchall
(1777-1842) and Elizabeth Wenseley (c1781-1861).
At the baptism of his children between 1831 and 1848 he was described as
a labourer. In 1851 he was said to be a corn chandler. He
died aged 69 years and was buried on 4 December 1875 in Billingshurst.
The burial register notes that he was from Old Mill House.
Mary Ann Scutt was baptised on 22 October 1809 in
Horsham, Sussex. She was the daughter of
William Scutt
and Sarah Henley. She died aged 84 years
and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1895 in the Horsham
registration district.
When the 1841 census was recorded, Henry and his wife Ann and their 6
children were living in Billingshurst village. In 1851 the couple
and 6 of their children were living in Billingshurst village.
Henry was then a 44 agricultural labourer/drillman and Mary Ann was 41.
In 1861 the family were still living in Billingshurst village, next door
to the grocers shop. Henry was then a 54 year old farmer of 20
acres and Mary Ann was 51. Also with them on census night were 3
of their children. The 1871 census records that Henry was a 64
year old farmer of 20 acres and Mary Ann was 62. They were living
in Billingshurst, about 2 or 3 doors from the Six Bells Beer House.
With them on census night was their 10 year old granddaughter
Fanny Burchell who was a 10 year old scholar who had been born
in Ockley, Surrey.
Henry Burchell and Mary Ann Scutt had 10 known children:

George Burchell was born about 1829. In 1841 he
was 12 years old.

Henry Burchell was
baptised on 20 February 1831 in Billingshurst. He married
Louisa Piper in
1852. (They have their own page.)

Maurice Burchell was baptised on 16 June 1833 in
Billingshurst. He died aged 17 years from inflammation and was
buried on 7 February 1851 in Billingshurst. At the time of the
1841 census he was 8 years old.

Charles Burchell was baptised on 11 December 1836 in
Billingshurst. he died in 1909. He was 4 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a
14 year old agricultural labourer and the eldest of his siblings living
at home. He was still the eldest of his siblings living at home in
1861 and he was then an unmarried 24 year old carter.

Mary Ann Burchell was baptised on 23 September 1838 in
Billingshurst. The 1841 census records that she was 2 year old
Mary Burchell. In 1851 she was a 12 year
old servant, out of place.

Ellen Burchell was baptised on 25 October 1840 in
Billingshurst. When the 1841 census was recorded she was 9 months
old. She was a 10 year old nurse girl in 1851. She may have
died aged 32 years and have been buried on 25 October 1872 in Horsham.

Owen Burchell was baptised on 2 July 1843 in
Billingshurst. He was a 7 year old scholar in 1851.

Jane Burchell was baptised on 6 July 1845 in
Billingshurst. She was a 5 year old scholar in 1851.

Ruth Burchell was baptised on 5 November 1848 in
Billingshurst. She was 2 years old when the 1851 census was
recorded. In 1861 she was a 12 year old scholar.
Ruth
married Owen Older by banns on 15 June 1868 in
Billingshurst. He was then a 25 year old bachelor and labourer
from Wisborough Green. She was a 20 year old spinster. Their
fathers were named as William Older a drillman and
Henry Burchell a farmer. The witnesses to their
marriage were John Belchamber and Mary Burchell.

Jesse Burchell was baptised on 3 August 1851 in
Billingshurst. When the 1861 census was recorded he was a 9 year
old scholar.
