Edward BURCHALL (1803-1891)

and Esther OVERINGTON (1809-1897)

Edward Burchall and Esther Overington by banns on 9 July 1829 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Wisborough Green.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Brooker and Ruth Carpenter.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Edward Burchalle was baptised on 17 July 1803 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Henry Burchall (1777-1842) and Elizabeth Wenseley (c1781-1861).  He died aged 88 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1891 in the Horsham registration district.  Another Edward Burchall was baptised on 5 March 1809 in Billingshurst, the son of William Burchell (1779-1850) and Sarah Laker (1781-1811) and yet another was born on 29 September 1809 and baptised on 12 November 1809 in Wisborough Green, the son of Edward Burchell and Charlotte Hoad.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 5 children were living at Newbridge in the parish of Billingshurst.  Edward was then a 35 year old lime burner and Esther was 30.  Their next door neighbour was 60 year old James Brooker who was also a lime burner and his wife Elizabeth.

The couple and 7 children were living in Newbridge in 1851 and Edward was a 47 year old lime burner and beer house keeper.  Esther was then 42 years old.

In 1861 the family were still living at Newbridge and Edward was then a 57 year old grocer and Esther was 52.  With them on census night were 7 of their children.

The 1871 census records that Edward was a 67 year old grocer and beer seller and Esther was 62.  They were living at Newbridge along with 2 of their children and 2 year old granddaugther Caroline S. H. Burchell.
