Edward BURCHALL
(1803-1891)
and Esther OVERINGTON (1809-1897)

Edward Burchall and Esther
Overington by banns on 9 July 1829 in Wisborough Green, Sussex. He
was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Wisborough Green.
The witnesses to their marriage were James Brooker and Ruth
Carpenter. (They were not my direct ancestors.)
Edward Burchalle was baptised on 17 July 1803 in
Billingshurst, Sussex. He was the son of
Henry Burchall
(1777-1842) and Elizabeth Wenseley
(c1781-1861). He died aged 88 years and his death was registered in
the second quarter of 1891 in the Horsham registration district.
Another Edward Burchall was baptised on 5 March 1809 in Billingshurst,
the son of William
Burchell (1779-1850) and
Sarah Laker
(1781-1811) and yet another was born on 29 September 1809 and baptised on 12
November 1809 in Wisborough Green, the son of Edward Burchell
and Charlotte Hoad.
Hester Overton was baptised on 7 May 1809 in Wisborough
Green, Sussex. She was the daughter of Thomas Overton
and Hannah Coldrey. She died aged 90 years and her
death was registered in the second quarter of 1897 in the Horsham
registration district.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 5 children were living at
Newbridge in the parish of Billingshurst. Edward was then a 35 year
old lime
burner and Esther was 30. Their next door neighbour was 60 year old James Brooker
who was also a lime burner and his wife Elizabeth.
The couple
and 7 children were living in Newbridge in 1851 and Edward was a 47 year old
lime burner and beer house keeper. Esther was then 42 years old.
In 1861 the family were still living at Newbridge and Edward was then a 57
year old grocer and Esther was 52. With them on census night were 7 of
their children.
The 1871 census records that Edward was a 67 year old grocer and beer seller
and Esther was 62. They were living at Newbridge along with 2 of their
children and 2 year old granddaugther Caroline S. H.

Edward Burchall and Esther Overington had 12 known
children:

Henry Burchell was baptised on 14 March 1830 in Wisborough Green.
His parents were named as Edward and Esther. In 1841 he was 10
years old and living with his parents in Billingshurst. In 1851 he
was probably the 21 year old Henry Burchell living
Marylebone, London, where he was a policeman. Another
Henry Burchell was baptised 20 February 1831 in Billingshurst,
and it was noted in the baptism register that his parents were Edward
and Mary Ann, but his father was most probably Henry. Yet another
Henry
Burchell was baptised on 18 March 1832 in Billingshurst,
the son of William Burchell and Lucy Hayler.

Elizabeth Burchell was baptised on 30 October 1831 in Wisborough
Green. She was 9 years old
in 1841. In 1861 she was an unmarried 29 year old and living at home
with her parents. As Elizabeth Pacey a 35 year
old widow she married Robert Watts Gardener by licence
on 31 January 1867. He was then a 34 year old widower and grocer
from Kirdford. Their fathers were named as Francis
Gardener a plumber/glazier and Edward Burchell
a grocer. The witnesses to their marriage were John Hoare
and Mary Ann Hoare.

Esther Burchell was baptised on 30 October 1831 in
Wisborough Green.

Walter Burchill was baptised on 2 February 1834 in Billingshurst.
He died aged 23 years and was buried on 2 August 1857 in Billinghurst.
The burial register recorded that he was from Newbridge and died of
decline. He was 7 years old in 1841.

Edward Burchell was baptised on 19 June 1836 in Billingshurst.
He died aged 17 years and was buried on 9 November 1853 in Billingshurst.
He was killed by the sweeps of a windmill. In 1841 he was 5 years
old. The 1851 census records that he was 14 year old E. Burchell and the eldest of his siblings living at home. He was
then a lime burner, like his father.

Thomas Burchell was born in Billingshurst and baptised on 1
December 1839 in Wisborough Green. He was
a year old when the 1841 census was recorded. He was 11 years old in
1851 and also a lime burner. In 1861 he was an unmarried 21 year old
painter and he was living with his parents.

Caroline Burchell was born in Billingshurst and baptised
on 1 May 1842 in Wisborough Green.
She was 9 years old in 1851.

Montague Burchell was born in Billingshurst and baptised on 31
March 1844 in Wisborough Green.
He was 7 years old in 1851. In 1861 he was a 17 year old bargeman.

Ann Burchell was born in Billingshurst and baptised on 21
March 1842 in Wisborough Green.
She was 4 years old in 1851. In 1861 she was 14 years old. In
1871 she was an unmarried 24 year and living at home with her parents
and young daughter.

Billingshurst and baptised on 17 January 1869 in Wisborough Green.
She was 2 years old when the 1871 census was recorded. She
died aged 2 years and was buried on 12 May 1871 in Billingshurst.

Albert Burchell was born in Billingshurst and baptised on
6 May 1849 in Wisborough Green.
He was 2 years old in 1851. In 1861 he was a 12 year old scholar.

John Burchell was born in Billingshurst and baptised on 26
January 1851 in Wisborough Green.
He was 3 months old when the 1851 census was recorded. In 1861 he
was a 10 year old scholar.

William Overington Burchell was born
in Billingshurst and baptised on 15 January 1854 in Wisborough Green.
At the time of the 1861 census he was a 7 year old scholar. In
1871 he was a 17 year old carpenter and living with his parents.
