George BUCKWELL (1737-?)

and Elizabeth DOWLEN (1741-1816)

 

George Buckwell and Elizabeth Dowlen married by banns on 18 June 1767 in Cowfold.  He was then of Hurstpierpoint and she of Cowfold.  The witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Bates and Walter Hills.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Elizabeth was the sister of my 4x Great Grandfather, Charles Dowlen.)

George Buckwell was baptised on 2 October 1737 at St. Thomas in Lewes, Sussex.  He was the son of George Buckwell (1714-1794) and Mary Smith.

Elizabeth Dowler was born on 24 December 1741 and baptised on 6 January1741/2 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Edward Dowler (1700-1787) and Jane Grant (1709-1783).  Elizabeth died a widow aged 75 years on 8 July 1816 and was buried on 10 July 1816 in Cowfold.  Her name appears on a headstone along with that of Barbara Stoner nee Buckwell.

 

George Buckwell and Elizabeth Dowlen had 7 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Buckwell was baptised on 5 August 1768 in Hurstpierpoint.

    Elizabeth may have married Timothy Thomas by banns on 28 February 1791 in Bolney.

  2. Jane Buckwell was baptised on 22 August 1772 in Hurstpierpoint.

  3. Sarah Buckwell was baptised on 9 November 1774 in Hurstpierpoint.

    Sarah married Richard Tully on 4 January 1797 in Hurstpierpoint.

  4. George Buckwell was baptised on 28 April 1776 in Hurstpierpoint.

    George married Susanna King on 26 May 1795 in Hurstpierpoint.

    George and Susanna had the following known children:

    1. Jane Buckwell was baptised on 1 June 1795 in Hurstpierpoint.

    2. Ann Buckwell was baptised on 31 March 1799 in Hurstpierpoint.

    3. George Buckwell was baptised on 8 August 1802 in Hurstpierpoint.

    4. Harriet Buckwell was baptised on 2 June 1805 in Hurstpierpoint.  She died in 1845.

  5. Edward Buckwell was baptised on 12 August 1779 in Hurstpierpoint.

  6. Charles Buckwell was baptised on 22 December 1781 in Hurstpierpoint.

  7. Barbara Buckwell was most probably part of this family.  She married Thomas Stoner in 1796.  (They have their own page.)
