Moses BUCK
(1847-?)
and Harriet STEDMAN (1851-1917)

Moses Buck
and
Harriet Stedman
married by banns on 10 April 1871 in Rudgwick, Sussex. He was then a
24 year old bachelor and gardener, whilst she was a 20 year old spinster and
cook. They were both of Rudgwick. Their fathers were named as
William Buck a labourer and John Stedmand a
gardener. The witnesses to their marriage were Edmund Buck
and Rebecca Stedman. (They were not
my direct ancestors. One of their daughters married my great
grandmother's brother.)
Moses Buck was baptised on 20 February 1847 in Rudgwick.
He was the son of William Buck (c1815-?) and Ann
Etherington (1817-?). At the time of his baptism his father
was a labourer of Lynwick Lane in Rudgwick. When the 1851 census was
recorded Moses was 3 years old and living with his mother and younger
brother in the Petworth Union workhouse and they were all described as
paupers. His father was then a prisoner and bricklayer in the Petworth
goal. In 1861 he was 14 years old and living with both his parents in
Vicarage Lane, Rudgwick. The census says his mother was a brickmaker,
but I would think that was more likely to have been his father's occupation.
Harriet Stedman was baptised on 29 June 1851 in Horsham,
Sussex. She was the daughter of John Stedman
(c1813-?) and Rebecca Cole (c1818-?). When the 1851
census was recorded she was 10 years old and living with her parents and
younger siblings at Hornbrook Hill, Horsham. Her father was then a
pauper and unable to work. The census then recorded that Harriet was
born in Battel, Sussex. She died aged 66 years in the first quarter of 1917
in the Battle registration district.

bachelor and a machinist's clerk of Wadhurst. His father was named as
Frederick Edward Boorman a bricklayer. Frances was a 22 years
spinster of Wadhurst. Her father was named as Moses Buck a
gardener. The witnesses to the marriage were Moses Buck and
