James BUCK (c1814-1897)

and Mary FILLERY (1804-1892)

James Buck and Mary Ireland married by banns on 20 July 1833 in Warnham.  He was a bachelor.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Garman and Sarah Buck.  She was then a widow.  Previously as Mary Fillery she had married Maurice Ireland by banns on 25 April 1827 in Warnham, Sussex.  Mary married with the consent of parents.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Ireland and Mary Dale.  (Maurice and Mary have their own page.)  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

James Buck was born about 1814 in Sullington, Sussex.  He died aged 83 years at the Union Workhouse, Horsham, formerly of Kingsfold, and was buried on 22 December 1897 in Warnham.  Might he have been baptised on 26 November 1815 in Horsham, Sussex and have been the son of John Buck and Frances Henson?  The baptism register noted that John was a bricklayer.

Mary Fillery was baptised on 30 September 1804 in Warnham.  She was the daughter of James Fillery and Mary.  Mary died aged 88 years and was buried on 1 April 1892 in Warnham.  The burial register noted that Mary Buck was from Rusper.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 5 children (William, Frances, James, John and Mary) were living at Garmans in Warnham.  James was a 26 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was 36.

In 1851 the couple and 4 children (Mary, Edward, Eliza and Jane) were living Friday Street, Warnham.  James was a 37 year old agricultural labourer and said he was born in Sullington and Mary was 47 and born in Warnham.  The family were living next door to the family of 43 year old John Buck who was born in Sullington.

The 1861 census recorded that couple and 2 children (William and Edward) were living at Wood Barn in Warnham.  James was a 47 year old agricultural labourer and again said he was born in Sullington.  Mary was 57 and from Warnham.

James Buck and Mary Fillery had 6 known children:

  1. Anna Buck was baptised on 10 November 1833 in Warnham.  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.

As Hannah Buck she married James Etherton by banns on 27 December 1851 in Warnham.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster and minor.  Their fathers were named as James Etherton and James Buck who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Elizabeth Ireland and Michael Turner.

  2. William Buck was baptised on 8 February 1835 in Warnham.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer from Kingston.  He was 6 years old in 1841.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 26 year old agricultural labourer, living with his parents.

  3. Frances Buck was baptised on 5 June 1836 in Warnham.  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.  She died aged 6 years and was buried on 13 February 1842 in Warnham.  In 1841 she was 5 years old.

  4. James Buck was baptised on 17 December 1837 in Warnham.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer.  He was 3 years old in 1841.
