Reverend William BROWNE (c1534-1613)

and Magdalene ELPHICK (c1540-1604)

William Browne and Magdalene Elphick were my 12x Great Grandparents.  They may have married in about 1560.

William Browne may have been baptised on 1 February 1534 in Horley, Surrey, and/or he may have been the son of John Browne (c1500-1546) and Jone, or he may have been a younger son of the Browne family of Betchworth.  He became the vicar of Horley in 1561 and remained there until his death.  He died on 14 November and was buried on 16 November 1613 in Horley.  He matriculated at Pembroke College in March 1546.  On the north wall of the chancel in the parish church of Horley, there is a black marble slab giving details of 3 generations of the Reverend Browne's family.

Magdalene Elphick's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried in Horley on 7 September 1604.  Most sources record her surname as Elsick and some as Elfick.

I have seen a couple of sources that state William married Margaret Bonnyk on 16 October 1604, which considering he was married to Magdalene for more than 40 years, it seems unlikely to me he remarried a month after her death.

William Browne and Magdalene Elphick had 4 or 5 known children:

  1. Phoebe Browne may have been born in Horley in about 1560.  She married Anthony Hugett on 30 May 1580 in Horley.

  2. Joseph Browne may have been born about 1562 in Horley.  He married Margery Patching in February 1583/4 in Horley.  (There is much on the web about this couple and their descendants.)  Joseph and Margery had 8 known children.

  3. Edward Browne may or may not have been a son of William and Magdalene.  Some sites say he was baptised in Worcestershire, which given his father was the vicar of Horley, would seem unlikely to me.  Others say he was born about 1566 in Horley, whilst others omit him altogether.

  4. Sarah Browne may have been born about 1566-9 in Horley.  She married John Burstowe on 10 October 1593 in Horley.

  5. Benjamin Browne, my 11x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 12 October 1571 in Horley, Surrey.  He married Sarah Leachford in 1596.  (They have their own page.)
