Moses BROOKES (c1595-1661)

and Dennise TOWNE (c1600-1626)

and Elizabeth (c1600-1662)

Moyses Brookes married twice.  Firstly to Dennise Towne on 23 June 1622 in Shipley, Sussex.  Moses then married Elizabeth.  The Shipley marriage register records that a John Brooke married Elizabeth Carver, widow on 15 September 1628, and then on 11 June 1629 a John Brookes married Eleanor Robbinett in Shipley, but the burial register does not record the death of an Elizabeth in between those 2 dates.  Neither the Sussex nor Surrey marriage indexes record the marriage of a Moses Brookes sometime between 1626 and 1630.  Might the Shipley marriage register have wrongly recorded the forename of the groom at the 1628 marriage?  Should John have been Moses?

Moses Brookesís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was buried on 5 May 1661 in Shipley and the burial register recorded that he was Moses Brookes, senior.  Moses left a will dated 3 May 1661, in which he styled himself as a taylor of Shipley.

Dennise Towneís date and place of birth are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 20 February 1625/6 in Shipley.  The burial register recorded that she was Denicia the wife of Moyses Brookes.

Elizabeth's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Together with her son John, she was appointed a joint executor of her husband's will.  As Elizabeth Brookes, widow, she may have been buried on 18 July 1662 in Shipley, but she did have a daughter-in-law named Elizabeth who had been widowed in 1657.

Moses Brookes and Dennise Towne had 1 known child:

  1. Edwardus Brookes was baptised on 5 February 1625/6 in Shipley.  He was not mentioned in his father's will, and given that his mother died soon after his baptism, might he have died as an infant?  His burial does not seem to have been recorded in the Shipley burial register.

Moses Brookes and Elizabeth had 5 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Brookes was buried on 13 February 1630/1 in Shipley.  The burial register recorded that she was the daughter of Moyses Brookes.

  2. A son was baptised on 5 December 1630 in Shipley.  The baptism register records that he was the son of Moses Brooks.  Might he have been Richard Brooks?  Richard son of Moses Brookes was buried on 10 February 1656/7 in Shipley.

Richard married Elizabeth Seagrow on 12 May 1656 in Shipley.

Richard and Elizabeth had 1 known daughter:

    1. Mary Brooks was baptised on 15 June 1657 in Shipley.  Her paternal grandfather left her a legacy of 1 shilling.

  3. Moses Brookes was baptised on 15 September 1633 in Shipley.  He married Elizabeth Doust in 1654.  (They will have their own page.)

  4. Elizabeth Brookes was baptised in December 1636 in Shipley.  Unfortunately the names of her parents were not recorded in the baptism register.  Her father left her a legacy of 5 shillings.

Elizabeth may have married Richard Nye on 28 May 1665 in Itchingfield.

  5. John Brookes was baptised on 19 December 1641 in Shipley.  John, together with his mother, were appointed the sole executors of his father's will and were to jointly receive the residue of his father's estate.

John may have married Joan Bransden on 24 February 1662/3 in Pulborough, Sussex.  John was then of Shipley and Joan of Pulborough.

They may have had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Brooks was baptised on 24 April 1664 in Shipley.

    2. Sarah Brookes was buried in April 1669 in Shipley.  The burial register records that she was the daughter of John Brookes.

William Carver and Elizabeth Butcher married on 29 January 1626 in Shalford, Surrey.  Shalford to Shipley is about 20-25 miles.
