John BROOKS (c1715-1781)

and Sarah STEPHENS (1717-1778)

St. Peter ad Vincula, from: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/28154John Brooks and Sarah Stephens were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 6 May 1740 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.  They were both then of Wisborough Green.

John Brooks date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He may have been buried on 18 December 1781 in Pulborough, Sussex.  The burial register only recorded that John Brookes was buried.  (His son, John, married in Pulborough in 1770 and was buried there in 1807.)  John may have been baptised on 26 February 1716/7 in Thakeham, Sussex and have been the son of 5 185 Edward Brooks (1677-1742) and 5 185 Mary Greenfield (c1685-?), but a John Brooks of Thakeham married Mary Stringer by banns on 14 April 1743 in West Grinstead.  Might our John have been the son of John Brooks (1685-?) and Elizabeth Tulley who married on 3 October 1710 in Wisborough Green?  A settlement certificate was issued to a John Brooks on 2 December 1752, by the overseers Wisborough Green to Pulborough, or vice versa.

Sarah Stephens was baptised on 17 May 1717 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  She was the daughter of 5 186 Thomas Stephens (1687-?) and 5 186 Mary Peckham.  She may have been buried on 1 March 1778 in Pulborough.  The burial register only recorded that Sarah Brookes was buried.

On 15 October 1775, a settlement certificate was issued to John Brooks and his wife Sarah Brooks, by the overseers of Billingshurst to Pulborough, or vice versa.

John Brooks and Sarah Stephens had 6 known children:

  1. Mary Brooks was baptised on 26 January 1740/1 in Wisborough Green.

Mary may have married Matthew Collinson by banns on 4 May 1762 in Shipley.  The witnesses to the marriage were John New and William Banfield.

  2. John Brooks, my possible 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 28 February 1743/4 in Billingshurst.  He married 5 84 Catherine Redford in 1770.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Henry Brooks was born on 9 May 1746 and baptised on 18 May 1746 in Billingshurst.  He may have been buried on 14 December 1765 in Pulborough, or he may have married Sarah Mills by licence on 8 February 1768 in Rustington, Sussex.  Henry was a bachelor of Rustington and Sarah a spinster of Rackham.  They both made their X marks.  The witnesses were Robert H? and Richard Humphrey.

Sarah may have been baptised on 19 July 1747 in Goring, Sussex and have been the daughter of Richard Mills (1716-?) and Sarah Gales.

Henry and Sarah had 5 known children:

    1. John Brooks was baptised on 31 July 1768 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register records that his parents were John and Sarah from Pulborough.  He was buried on 4 December 1768 in Pulborough and the burial register recorded that he was an infant.

    2. Sarah Brooks was baptised on 29 September 1771 in Billingshurst.  I believe she married James Slater in 1794.  (They have their own page.)

    3. Elizabeth Brooks was baptised on 30 September 1781 in Pulborough, Sussex.

    4. Fanny Brooks was baptised on 30 September 1781 in Pulborough, Sussex.

    5. William Brooks was baptised on 30 September 1781 in Pulborough, Sussex.

  4. Sarah Brooks was baptised on 20 November 1748 in Billingshurst.

  5. Edward Brooks was baptised on 29 August 1751 in Wisborough Green.

  6. William Brooks was baptised on 29 August 1751 in Wisborough Green.  He may have been buried on 22 July 1753 in Pulborough, or he may have married Mary Tyler by licence on 17 September 1770 in Rusper.  They married with the consent of parents.  William was a bachelor of Nutfield and Mary a Spinster of Rusper.  The witnesses were Edward Russell and William Tyler.

William and Mary had 1 known daughter:

    1. Sophia Brooks was baptised on 21 February 1789 in Pulborough.

(A William Brooks son of William Brooks, was baptised on 29 April 1748 in Pulborough.  I think he was the one who was buried in 1753.)
