William BOX (1780-1861)
and Philadelphia BUDGEN (1787-1806)
and Mary PAIN (1788-?)

William
Box
married twice, firstly to
Philadelphia Budgen by banns on 31 May 1804 in Ardingly, Sussex. They
both made their marks. The witnesses to their marriage were Charles
Chatfield and Richard Creasey. The banns were published
in Ardingly on 29 April, 6 and 13 May 1804. William next married Mary Pain
by banns on 25 April 1808 in Ardingly.
He was described as a widower and she a spinster and they were both of
Ardingly. (They were not my direct
ancestors. William was the nephew of my 4x great grandmother, Sarah
Box.)
William Box was born on 23 July
1780 and baptised on 6 August 1780 in Ardingly. He was the son of
John Box (1757-1826)
and Mary Williams
(1761-1829). He died in 1861 in Ardingly.
Philadelphia Budgen was baptised on 11 February
1787 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was the daughter of Thomas Budgen (1751-?)
and Mary Peckham. She died aged 19 years and was buried on 13
May 1806 in Ardingly.
Mary Pain was baptised on 4 May 1788 in Balcombe, Sussex.
She was the daughter of
Thomas Payne and
Mary Elsey (1758-?).
William Box and Philadelphia Budgen had 1 known child:

William Box was born on 1 September 1804 and baptised on 24
September 1804. He died on 20 December 1868 in Ardingly.
William married
Ann Burt on 24 January 1827 in Ardingly.
Ann was born on 21 September 1805 and baptised on 20 October 1805 in
Ardingly and was the daughter of William Burt (1767-?) and Mary Francis (1767-?). Ann died in 1845.
William and Ann had 8 known children. (They will eventually have
their own page.)
William Box and Mary Pain had 8 known children:

George Box was baptised on 26 September 1808 in Ardingly and was
buried there on 21 October 1808 aged 2 years.

Ann Box was born on 24 May 1810 and baptised on 10 February 1811
in Ardingly.

Thomas Box was born on 19 September 1812 and baptised on 8
November 1812 in Ardingly. He died in 1878.
Thomas married
Anne Gard by banns on 14 April 1834 in Brighton. He was
then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.
They both signed their names. The witnesses to the marriage were
Walter Budgen and John Pocock.
Ann was baptised on 5 January 1812 in Keymer, Sussex and was the
daughter of John Gard and Sarah Tully.
Thomas and Ann had the following children:

Alfred Box was baptised on 10 July 1836 in Ardingly.
Alfred married Jane Budgen on 16 July 1869 in
Brighton. Jane was baptised on 17 October 1841 in West Hoathly
and was the daughter of Walter Budgen and
Elizabeth Payne.

William Box was baptised on 11 November 1838 in
Ardingly.

Emma Box was baptised on 28 March 1841 in Ardingly
and buried there of 22 September 1843.

Thomas Box was baptised on 7 April 1844 in Ardingly.
Thomas married Sarah. Thomas and Sarah had
the following child:

Jane Box was baptised on 29 November 1868 in
Ardingly.

Mary Box was baptised on 16 July 1815 in Ardingly and died in
1816.

Elizabeth Box was baptised on 11 October 1818 in Ardingly.

Harriet Box was born on 24 April 1820 and baptised on 11 June
1820 in Ardingly. Did she marry George Champson on 18 July
1852 in Crawley, Sussex?

Alfred Box was born on 27 April 1820 and baptised on 25 June 1820
in Ardingly. He was buried there on 2 September 1820.
(Something not quiet right here!! How could Harriet and Alfred
have been born 3 days apart and be part of the same family?)

John Box was baptised on 12 September 1824 in Ardingly.
John
married Susan Streeter on 10 April 1845 in Ardingly
Susan
was baptised on 12 February 1826 in Worth and was the daughter of Thomas Streeter and
Sarah Harding.
John and Susan had the following children:

Harriet Box was baptised on 16 July 1847 in Crawley
Down, Sussex.

John Box was baptised on 10 February 1850 in
Crawley Down.

Sarah Box was baptised on 1 February 1851 in
Brighton, at which time her father was a carpenter and the family
were living in Tidy Street, Brighton.
