Peter BOX (1777-?)
and Sarah MASON (1774-?)

Peter
Box
and
Sarah Mason married by
banns on 27 May 1800 in Ardingly, Sussex. At the time he was of Ardingly and she of Lindfield,
Sussex. (They were not my direct ancestors. Peter was the
grand nephew of my 5x Great Grandfather,
John Box.)
Peter Knowls was born on 1 March 1777 and baptised on 31 March 1777 in Nutfield,
Surrey. He was the son of
Peter Box
(1748-1792) and
Elizabeth Knowles (c1752-1796).
Sarah Mason was baptised on 6 August 1774 in Lindfield,
Sussex. She was
the daughter of Thomas Mason and Sarah Gearing.
Peter Box and
Sarah Mason had 3 known
children:
-
William Box was born on 28 May 1800 and baptised on 29 June
1800 in Ardingly. He was a sawyer. William married
Charity Childs
on 17 March 1821 in Ardingly. On 8 November 1822 a removal order was issued to William, his wife
Charity and 1 year old son Richard, by the overseers of East Grinstead
parish to Ardingly (or vice versa). William and Charity had the following son:
-
Richard Box was baptised on 3 November 1822 in Ardingly. Richard married
Sarah Jeffrey by banns on 28 July
1844 in Balcombe. They were both single and both signed their
names. The witnesses to their marriage were Harriet
Jeffrey and Edward Steele. Sarah was
baptised on 13 February 1825 in Balcombe and was the daugther of
William Jeffery and Ann. Richard and Sarah had 7 known children.
-
Peter Box was born on 5 August 1802 and baptised on 26
September 1802 in Ardingly. He was buried on 27 August 1867 in
Worth, Sussex. Peter married
Mary Ann Holman by banns on 14
April 1827 in Worth. They were both then of Worth. Peter
was a bachelor and Mary Ann a spinster and they both signed their names.
The witnesses to their marriage were John Fuller and
Sarah Sherlock.
Mary Holman was baptised on 22 December 1805 in
Balcombe, Sussex and was the daughter of Thomas Holman
and Sarah Cliften. She died aged 73 years at 7
Catherine Street, London and was buried on 20 January 1879 in Worth. When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living at Turners Hill
in the parish of Worth. Peter was then a wheelwright. In
1851 they were living in Worth, not far from the Queens Head.
Peter was then a 48 year old wheelwright and Mary was 45 and her place
of birth was recorded as Balcombe. In 1861, they were living in a
cottage, possibly in Cuckfield Road, Worth. Also with them on
census night were their 4 sons, 9 year old grandson, Caleb Box
who had been born in Brighton and 15 year old general servant, Mary A. Bish. Peter and Mary had 8 known children:
-
William Box was born in Balcombe and baptised on 11
February 1828 in Worth. He was not with his parents when the
1841 census was recorded. The 1861 census records that he was
a 30 year old widower and wheelwright, and he was then living with
his parents.
William may have married Ann
Davey on 22 September 1854 in Hove, Sussex.
-
Peter Box was born about 1830 in Worth. He was 10
years old in 1841. When the 1881 census was recorded he was an
unmarried 50 year old farm labourer lodging in the home of George Strudwick at Pound Hill Cottage in Worth.
-
Sarah Box was born on 5 August 1832 in Worth and baptised
on 23 September 1832 at the Cuckfield Providence Chapel on

he was 14 and the eldest of his siblings living at home. In
1861 he was an unmarried 23 year old wheelwright living with his
parents. John married
Elizabeth Tullett on 21
January 1865 in Worth. Elizabeth was baptised on 1 March 1840
in Worth and was the daughter of Thomas Tullett (1816-?) and
Eliza Penfold (c1821-?). John
and Elizabeth had 6 known children.

Joseph Box was baptised on 28 March 1842 in Worth. He
may have died in the second quarter of 1842.
