Peter BOX (1748-1792)
and Elizabeth KNOWLES (c1752-1796)

Peter
Box
and Elizabeth Knowles were married by
banns on 15 January 1780 in Horne, Surrey. He was then of Ardingly
and she of Horne. (They were not my direct ancestors. Peter was the
nephew of my 5x Great Grandfather,
John Box.)
Peter Box
was born on 5 January 1747/8 and baptised
on 24 January 1747/8 in Ardingly, Sussex. He was the son of
George Box (1723-1801)
and Judith White
(1722-1802). He died aged 44 years and was
buried on 28 March 1792 in Ardingly.
Elizabeth Knowles died aged 44 years and was buried on 10 March 1796 in Ardingly,
therefore, she was born about 1752. The IGI records that an
Elizabeth Knowles was baptised on 24 March 1754 in Horne, the (twin?)
daughter of William Knowles and Elizabeth, but they had
another daughter Elizabeth baptised in Horne on 25 September 1757.
Peter Box and
Elizabeth Knowles had 4 known
children:
-
Peter Knowls was born on 1 March 1777 and baptised on 31 March 1777 in Nutfield,
Surrey. As Peter Box he married
Sarah Mason in 1800.
(They have their own page.)
-
John Box
was born on 21 May 1780 and baptised on 18 June 1780 in Ardingly.
-
Elizabeth
Box was born on 3 May 1784 and baptised on 30 May 1784 in Ardingly.
-
Judith Box
was born on 5 December 1786 and baptised on 4 February 1787 in Ardingly.
She may have died in the third quarter of 1855 in the Cuckfield
registration district.
Judith married John Skinner by licence on 17 August 1804 in
Ardingly. At the time he was of Balcombe and she of Ardingly.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living at ???comb in
Slaugham. John was then a 61 year old agricultural labourer and
Judeth was said to be 56. Also with them on census night were 2 of
their children and 71 year old Thomas Roveny. By
1851 Judith was a 67 year old widow and pauper living in Handcross,
within the parish of Slaugham. Her youngest son was also with her
in 1851. John
and Judith had the following known children:
-
Elizabeth Skinner was baptised on 16 November 1806 in
Balcombe. Did she marry Henry Marchant by
banns on 31 May 1828 in Cuckfield. He was a bachelor and she a
spinster and they were both of Cuckfield.

Skinner was baptised on 14 November 1813 in Slaugham.

she was an unmarried 28 year old housemaid in the home of 50 year
