John BOX (1804-?)

and Lucy CARD (1801-1866)

John Box and Lucy Card married on 18 October 1824 in Hartfield, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  John was the grand nephew of my 5x Great Grandfather, John Box.)

John Box was born on 23 September 1804 and baptised on 10 February 1805 in Ardingly.  He was the son of Peter Box (1777-?) and Sarah Mason (1774-?).

Lucy Card was baptised on 1 February 1801 in Hartfield.  She was the daughter of Stephen Card and Mary Bashford.  She died aged 65 years and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1866 in the Brighton registration district.

The 1841 census records the John and Lucy were both 30 years old and living with their 3 children at Cheltenham Place in Brighton.  John was then a stable keeper.  In 1851, John was said to have been aged 46 years and Lucy was 48.  John gave his place of birth as Ardingly and Lucy as East Grinstead.  They were then living at 2 Cheltenham Place and John was the proprietor of a Hackney Carriage.  When the 1861 census was recorded, Lucy was a 58 year old married laundress living at 18 Newhaven Street, Brighton.  With her was 50 year old visitor Elizabeth Slaughter who was also a laundress.

John Box and Lucy Card had 6 known children:

  1. Ann Box Card was baptised on 18 January 1824 in Hartfield.  As Ann Card Box she married Philip Alfrey in 1844.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Mildred Ann Box was baptised on 23 July 1826 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.

  3. John Box was baptised on 11 November 1827 in Brighton.  He died in 1891.  In 1841 he was said to be 11 years old.

John married Mary Ann Carey on 30 May 1846 in Brighton.

When the 1871 census was recorded the couple were living at 4 Oxford Street, Brighton.  John was a 44 year old flyman and Mary Ann was a 48 year old ironer.

  4. Louisa Box was baptised on 17 July 1831 in Brighton.  In 1841 she was 9 years old.

  5. Elizabeth Sophia Ruth Box was baptised on 4 August 1839 in Brighton.  The 1841 census records that Sophia Box was 2 years old.  In 1851 she was an 11 year old scholar.

  6. Edward Albert Box was baptised on 30 January 1842 in Brighton.  The 1851 census records that Albert Box was a 10 year old scholar.
