John BOKES (c1540-1606)
and Unknown (?-?)

John
Bokes may have been my 10x Great
Grandfather. He was buried on 12 January 1605/6 in Barcombe, Sussex. He left a
will
dated 23 December 1605 and proved at Lewes on 24 February 1605/6.
At the time of his death he was a yeoman of Hamsey, although he made it
clear in his will that he wished to be buried in Barcombe. He left 5 shillings to the
poor of “Barkham” but nothing to
those of Hamsey. He mentioned three
servants in his will; Thomas Moore and William
Marten who each received a pair of sheets and John Aspe
who was bequeathed “..one sute of my
worse apparell”. He also mentioned his four children and wife
Agnes.
John may have been the son
of Robert Bokes. John may have married in the mid
1560's, possibly to Julian who was buried in Barcombe in 1587.
As Jo Boakes
(male) he may have
married Philip Page (female) on 27 July 1587 in Barcombe.
She
was then of Firle.
Then as John Bookes he married Agnes Simons,
widow, on 10 November 1595 in Barcombe.
He may also, as John Bokes, have married
Eleanor Heer, widow on 12 November 1559 in Glynde, Sussex,
but I would think that was a different John.
John Bokes and
Unknown had 4 known children:
-
Joane
Bokes was mentioned in her father's will as Joane Moore,
and was left a legacy of £3-8-6. She was also most probably
mentioned in the 1571 will of her Grandfather, Robert Bokes.
Joane married William
A'Moore on 21 July 1583 in Barcombe.
Given this date she must have been born before 1567.
William and
Joan may have had the following children:
-
Johnathan More was baptised on 26 September 1585 in
Barcombe. Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism
register.
-
Jone Amore was baptised on 18 May 1586 in Barcombe.
-
Thomas A More was mentioned in his uncle Thomas
Aptott's will of 1607.
-
Mary
Bokes was mentioned in her father's will as Mary Apott.
Her father also left her a legacy of £3-8-6. As Marye
Aptot widow she married Edward Chawtler or
Chantler on 2 November 1607 in Barcombe. A
Thomas Aptott was sentenced to ? on 13 November 1607
and left a
will which was proved on the same day. I have a copy of
his sentence, but it is in latin! Names from the document are:
John Bennett, Marie Aptot,
William Aptott and Thomas Aptott. A
Thomas Aptott married Mary Baker on 17
April 1604 in Laughton. Might her surname have been Bokes?
-
Edward
Bokes was mentioned in his father's will and was left a legacy
of £5. He may have been buried on 16 March 1612 in Barcombe
Edward married
Marye Kid on 22 September 1594 in Barcombe.
Edward and Mary
had the following children:
-
Thomas Bookes was baptised on 15 or 16 May 1596 in Barcombe.
The baptism register recorded his father's name as Edmund. He
may have died in 1630 and have left a will.
Thomas may
have married Annis Venner on 22 May 1620 in
Barcombe. At the time they were both of Barcombe. But there was also a
Thomas
Bookes baptised on 4 June 1592 in Barcombe, the son of
Richard Bokes.
Thomas and
Annis had the following children:
-
Marie Boxe was born or baptised on 27 or 28
January 1620/1 in Barcombe. As Mary Box
she may have married Jasper Newman on 25
February 1651/2 in Chailey.
Jasper and Mary had the following child:
-
Anne Newman was baptised on 13 March 1652/3
in Chailey. Only her father's name was noted in the
baptism register and he was said to be of Lindfield.
-
Thomas Box was baptised on 9 February 1622/3 in
Barcombe.
-
Doritie Boox was baptised on 27 March 1625 in
Barcombe. She may have married John Blackmore
on 2 October 1645 in Lindfield. He may have been baptised
on 15 October 1620 in Buxted and have been the son of
Anthonie Blackmare and Alice Martin.
-
John Boox was baptised on 10 June 1627 in
Barcombe. A John Boxe was buried on 10
June 1665 in Chailey. He was killed by thunder on 8 June
1665. (Chailey to Barcombe village centres is about 6 miles,
but the parishes adjoin one another.) There was another John born in 1649, see further below.
-
Francis Boxe was baptised on 18 July 1630 in
Barcombe.
-
Joan Boxe was baptised on 21 May 1598 in Barcombe.
The baptism register recorded her father's name as Edmund. She
was buried on 1 November 1618 in Barcombe.
-
Francis Bokes was baptised on 13 January 1599/1600 in
Barcombe.
Francis may
have married Alice Stedwell on 22 June 1635 in
Laughton, Sussex.
Francis had
the following child:
-
Edward Boxe was baptised on 11 March 1637/8 in
Laughton.
-
Agnes Boxe was baptised on 10 October 1602 in Barcombe.
She may have married Nicholas Copper on 12 April
1621 in Laughton. This marriage date has come from the Sussex
marriage index which records her surname as Bokes in the parish
register but Baker in the Bishop's transcripts.
-
William Bookes was baptised on 20 or 30 September 1604 in
Barcombe. He was buried on 13 January 1617/8 in Barcombe and
it was noted in the burial register that he was the son of
Edward Box.
-
Elizabeth Boxe was baptised on 28 September 1606 in
Barcombe. As Elizabeth Boax she may have married John Austin on 16
October 1632 in Barcombe. He was then of Ringmer and she of
Barcombe.
-
Ann
Boxe was baptised on 7 August 1608 in Barcombe. The
baptism register recorded her father's name as Edmund.
-
Edward Boxe was baptised on 9 October 1608 in Barcombe (I
wonder if he or Ann was baptised in 1610?). The baptism
register recorded his father's name as Edmund. As
Edward Bokes he may have been buried on 16 October 1683 at
St. Michael's in South Malling, Sussex.
Edward married
Annis Elman on 24 January 1642/3 in Hamsey. Might he
also have married Jane Moone on 28 July 1653 in
Laughton? And did she as Jane Boakes widow of
St. John sub Castro, marry John Idle widower of St.
John sub Castro, on 22 June 1659 in Isfield, Sussex?
Edward had
the following children
-
William Boakes was baptised on 10 December 1643
in Barcombe.
-
Mary Boxe was baptised on 30 August 1645 in
Laughton.
-
Edward Boxe was baptised on 16 May 1647 in
Laughton.
-
John Boxe was baptised on 10 June 1649 in
Laughton. Did he marry Charity Norton by
licence on 20 February 1684/5 in Clayton, Sussex? They
were both then of Clayton.
-
Thomas Boxe was baptised on 27 March 1653/4 in
Laughton.
-
Samuel Boxe was baptised on 11 June 1654 in
Laughton. (Might he have been baptised in 1655?)
-
Dorothye Boxe was baptised on 8 November 1612 in Barcombe.
Dorothy married Thomas Whiteman on 24 April 1638 in
Barcombe. Thomas and Dorothy may have had the following
children:
-
Jane Whiteman was baptised on 17 February
1638/9 in Barcombe.
-
Edward Whitman was baptised on 25 October 1640
in Barcombe.
-
Thomas Whiteman was baptised on 11 December
1642 in Barcombe.
-
William Bokes,
my possible 9x Great Grandfather, was mentioned in his father's will and
was also left a legacy of £5. He married 4 times. His third
wife Susanna Bearde
was my 9x Great Grandmother. (They have their own page.)
