George BOX (1723-1801)

and Judith WHITE (1722-1802)

George Box and Judith White were married on 8 February 1742/3 at the Fleet Prison, London.  George was then described as a bachelor and wheelwright of Ardingly, whilst Judith was a spinster.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  George was the brother of my 5x Great Grandfather, John Box.)

George Box was baptised on 5 January 1723/4 in Ardingly, Sussex.  He was the second son and third child of George Box (1687-1757) and Ann Comber (1697-1753).  He died aged 78 years and was buried on 18 March 1801 in Ardingly.  His maternal grandmother was also a Judith White, who was one of two born in 1666.

Judith White was baptised on 2 March 1721/2 in Balcombe, Sussex.  She was the second daughter and fourth child of Peter White (c1690-1748) and Sarah Vinall (1695-1722).  It would seem her mother was buried on the same that Judith was baptised.  She died aged 81 years and was buried on 23 March 1802 in Ardingly.  Another Judith White was baptised on 25 September 1728 in Worth, the daughter of Richard White, but she would have been too young to have married in 1743.

As yet, I don't know if the two Judiths born in 1666, and the two in 1722 and 1728 were all related in someway.

George Box and Judith White had 11 known children: 

1. George Box was born on 3 August 1743 and baptised on 14 August 1743 in Ardingly.

2. William Box was born on 25 January 1744/5 and baptised on 10 February 1744/5 in Ardingly.  He probably died in infancy or as a child and certainly before 1765.

3. Mary Box was born on 5 December 1746 and baptised on 4 January 1746/7 in Ardingly.  She died aged 7 weeks and was buried on 29 January 1746/7 in Ardingly.

4. Peter Box was born on 5 January 1747/8 and baptised on 24 January 1747/8 in Ardingly.  He Elizabeth Knowles in 1780.  (They have their own page.)

5. Sarah Box was born on 16 June 1750 and baptised on 8 July 1750 in Ardingly.

6. Anne Box was born on 7 August 1752 and baptised on 30 August 1752 in Ardingly.  She married Thomas Sawyer in 1779.  (They have their own page.)

7. Richard Box was born on 8 November 1754 and baptised on 1 December 1754 in Ardingly.  He married Mary Lywood in 1780.  (They have their own page.)

8. John Box was born on 19 September 1756 and baptised on 10 October 1756 in Ardingly.  He married Martha Renalds in 1778.  (They have their own page.)

9. Judith Box was born on 1 March 1759 and baptised on 30 March 1759 in Ardingly.

   Judith married Benjamin Ellis on 1 July 1785 in East Grinstead.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of East Grinstead.

   Benjamin was baptised on 17 April 1757 in West Hoathly and was the son of Benjamin Ellis (1723-?) and Sarah Cox.

   Benjamin and Judith had 8 known children:

   1. Frances Sarah Ellis was baptised on 19 June 1786 in West Hoathly.

   2. Benn Ellis was baptised on 11 May 1788 in West Hoathly.

   3. Richard Ellis was baptised on 16 January 1791 in West Hoathly.

   4. William Ellis was privately baptised on 6 March 1793 in West Hoathly and received into the Ardingly Church on 2 November 1795.

   5. Ann Ellis was born on 22 September 1795 and baptised on 2 November 1795 in Ardingly.

   6. Edward Ellis was baptised on 10 December 1797 in West Hoathly.

   7. Mary Ellis was baptised on 21 May 1800 in East Grinstead.

   8. Elizabeth Ellis was baptised in January 1804 in West Hoathly.

10. Elizabeth Box was born on 20 April 1762 and baptised on 2 May 1762 in Ardingly.  She married Thomas Newnham in 1791.  (They have their own page.)

11. William Box was born on 4 September 1765 and baptised on 15 September 1765 in Ardingly.  He married Elizabeth Wood in 1788.  (They have their own page.)
