Peter BOURNER (1793-1859)

and Benedicta Jane HOLLAND (c1795-1841)

Peter Bourner and Benedicta Jane Holland married by licence on 6 January 1816 at Salehurst, Sussex.  They were both then said to be 21 years old and he was from Battle, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Samuel Gutsell and John Heathfield.  Peter married again in the first quarter of 1842 to Mary Gallop in the Battle registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors, but they were the 4x Great Grandparents of my cousin Julie Willard.)

Peter Bourner was baptised on 3 May 1793 in Battle, Sussex.  He was the son of James Bourner (c1759-?) and Elizabeth Lade (c1766-?).  He died on 20 December 1859 and his death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1859 in the Hailsham registration district.

Benedicta Jane Holland's date and place of birth are unknown, to me.  Her name was recorded as Jane against the baptisms of her children in Crowhurst and Jane Benedicta against those in Dallington.  Her death was recorded in the third quarter of 1841 in the Battle registration district as Jane Bennedict Bourner.

Mary was born about 1805 in Northiam, Sussex.

The 1841 census recorded that Peter and Jane were both 45 years old and living at Bridgenhill, Ashburnham, along with 5 children.  Peter was then a farmer.  The previous property on the census enumerators route was Prays Hill and that was occupied by 57 year old David Honeysett and his 52 year old wife Frances.

When the 1851 census was recorded Peter was a 58 year old farmer of 212 acres, living at Bridgenhill in Ashburnham, Sussex, along with his 46 year old wife Mary, and 5 children.
