Henry BOURNE (1771-?)

and Sarah DUNK (c1777-1847)

Henry Bourne and Sarah Dunk married by licence on 2 May 1798 in Brightling, Sussex.  They were both of Brightling and both signed their names.  The witnesses were Richard Foster (I think that's he's surname, but it could be Porter) and John GrantJohn Grant was probably a church warden as he witnessed several marriages.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Thomas was the brother of my 4x Great Grandfather, John Bourne.)

Henry Bourne was baptised on 19 October 1771 in Hellingly, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Bourne (1746-1801) and Ann Gibson (1747-1801).  He was appointed a joint executor of his father's will, along with William Grigson.  The 1851 census records that he was an 81 year old widower, living with his son Robert.

Sarah Dunk's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 70 years and was buried on 21 April 1847 in Hellingly.

In 1821 Henry inherited Carricks Hill Farm in Dallington, under the terms of William Dunk's will, which was subject to specified payments to Edward Buss of Brightling, labourer and his wife Elizabeth and Thomas Waters of Herstmonceux, appraiser, and his wife AnneHenry Bourne had lived initially at Brightling, but was of Dallington in 1823 and of Ewhurst in 1828 when he, with others, sold the property.  Land Tax records that the property was owned by William Dunk's executors in 1825.  John Fuller of Rosehill, Brightling bought the property in 1828.  In 1841, Henry and Sarah were living at Court Lodge in Kingsnorth, Kent and he was then a farmer.

Henry Bourne and Sarah Dunk had 5 known children:

  1. Edmund Hilary Bourne was baptised on 17 February 1799 in Brightling.

  2. Henry Bourne was baptised in November 1800 in Brightling.  He died aged 68 years and was buried on 12 April 1867 in Upper Dicker, Sussex.

Henry married Sarah Shaw on 16 July 1827 in Brightling.

Sarah was baptised on 16 July 1807 in Bexhill, Sussex, and was the daughter of William Shaw and Sarah Lansdell.  Sarah was buried in Upper Dicker on 5 June 1858.  (For more details about Sarah Lansdell, please visit Historyscape.)

When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living in Bodiam, Sussex and Henry was an agricultural labourer.  Also living with them at that time was 55 year old Sarah Shaw.  In 1851 the family were living in Hellingly and Henry was again an agricultural labourer.

Henry and Sarah had 9 known children:

    1. Sarah Ann Bourne was baptised on 22 April 1829 in Brightling, at which time her father was a farmer of Bodiam.  She was 12 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.

    2. William Henry Bourne was baptised on 17 October 1830 in Bodiam.  He was 10 years old in 1841.

    3. Thirza Bourne was baptised on 30 December 1832 in Bodiam.  In 1841 she was 8 years old.

Thirza married John Bourne on 8 June 1857 in Upper Dicker, Sussex.

John was baptised on 19 September 1824 in Hellingly and was the son of William Bourne (1787-1871) and Jane (c1786-1868).

    4. Norman Bourne was baptised on 30 November 1834 in Bodiam.  He was 6 years old in 1841.

    5. Amos Bourne was baptised on 19 February 1837 in Bodiam.  He was 4 years old in 1841.  In 1841 he was a 14 year old agricultural labourer and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

    6. George Bourne was baptised on 30 June 1839 in Bodiam.  He died aged 1 year and 2 months and was buried on 15 August 1840 in Bodiam.

    7. Mary Ann Bourne was probably part of this family.  She died aged 2 days and was buried on 29 June 1841 in Bodiam.

    8. Belinda Bourne was born about 1844 in Shadoxhurst, Kent.  In 1851 she was 6 years old.

    9. Caroline Bourne was born about 1846 in Shadoxhurst.  In 1851 she was 4 years old.

  3. Sarah Eliza Bourne was baptised on 6 June 1802 in Brightling.

  4. Alfred Bourne was baptised on 21 December 1806 in Brightling.

  5. Robert Bourne was baptised on 15 December 1809 in Brightling.

Robert married Ann Grist on 9 January 1839 at Brookland, Romney Marsh, Kent..  She was born about 1815 in Romney Marsh, Kent.

In 1851 the couple and their daughter were living at Summer??? Court in Sellinge, Kent.  Robert's fahter was also living with them.

Robert and Ann had the following daughter:

    1. Catherine Bourne was born about 1840 on Romney Marsh, Kent

William Grigson

A William Gregson married Ann Pattenden by licence on 30 December 1778 in Brightling.  William was probably the son of William Grigson and Sarah Piper who married by licence on 22 June 1747 in Brightling.  William Grigson was appointed a joint executor of Thomas Bourne's 1801 will.
