John BOTTING
(1721-?)
and Elizabeth ELLIOT (c1730-?)

John Button
and
Elizabeth Elliot
married by licence on 19 September 1753 at St. Pancras in Chichester,
Sussex. He was then of West Grinstead and she of Billingshurst.
Their marriage licence was also dated 19 September and recorded that he was
a bachelor and she a spinster.
John Botting
was probably baptised on 5 September 1721 in West Grinstead, Sussex, the son of
James Botting
(1679-1734)
and Jane Woolven
(1681-1742). He may have been buried on 15 January 1797 in West
Grinstead, but the burial register only records that John Botting was
buried.
But there were other John Botting's born about the same time -
see notes below.
John may have died after 1789 as in that year he may have been named in his
possible sister-in-law's will.
Elizabeth
Elliot's date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me. As Betty Botting, wife of
John, she was buried on 2 February 1785 in West Grinstead. Might she have been baptised as
Betty Elliot on 14 November 1735 in Itchingfield, Sussex, and have been
the daughter of Richard Elliot and Betty? (Itchingfield
borders Billingshurst.) Her possible parents may have married in May
1729 in Horsham, Sussex as Richard Elyat and Elizabeth Knight.
John Botting
and Elizabeth Elliot had 5 known children:
-
Mary
Botton was baptised on 24 November 1753 in Henfield,
Sussex. Her mother's name was recorded as Betty in the baptism
register.
As Mary Botting she married Henry Haybittle by licence on 5 March 1776
in West Grinstead. Their marriage licence was issued on 4 March 1776 by
the Archdeaconry of Chichester, which recorded that Mary was a 21 year old
spinster of West Grinstead (4 weeks) and Henry a 21 year old bachelor and
farmer also of West Grinstead (4 weeks).
-
Elizabeth Botten was baptised on 12 August 1755 in Henfield.
Her mother's name was recorded as Elizabeth in the baptism register.
As Elizabeth Botting she may have married John Leffen by
licence on 9 January 1777 in Henfield. He was then a bachelor and
she a spinster. The witnesses to the marriage were Hannah
Banfield and William Vinall.
John and Elizabeth may have
been the parents of:
-
William Leffen married Mary Mitchell on 9 February 1809 in
Henfield. He was then a bachelor and she a widow.
-
Jane Botten was baptised on 3 December 1760 in Henfield. Her
mother's name was also recorded as Elizabeth. Might she have been
named after her father's mother?
As Jane Botting she
married Joseph Pollard by banns on 7 August 1781 in Henfield.
They were both then described as sojourners, he was a bachelor and she a
spinster. The witnesses to the marriage were John Leffen and
William Vinall.
Joseph and Jane had the following son:
-
Joseph Pollard married Ruth Botting by
banns on 21 October 1805 in Horsham, Sussex. Joseph was then a
bachelor and Ruth a spinster and they were both of Horsham. The
witnesses to their marriage were Henry Heriott and
Elizabeth Heriott.
Ruth Botten was baptised on 1 July 1787 in Ashington and
was the daughter of William Botting and Ann
Jupp. In 1841, Ruth was living in the Steyning Union
Workhouse. When the 1851 census was recorded she was a 64 year old
widow and general servant living in the home of 76 or 78 year old
Francis Elliott at Beggars rest (I think it's rest, but
not sure) at Handcross in the parish of Cuckfield, Sussex. Also
part of the household was 80 year old widower Edward Hills.
Joseph and Ruth had at least 2 children:
-
James Pollard was baptised on 7 February 1813 in
Slaugham.
-
Elizabeth Pollard was baptised on 23 June 1816 in
Slaugham.
-
John Botting was baptised on 29 March 1766 in Henfield. His
mother's name was also recorded as Elizabeth.
-
Ann Botting was baptised on 10 June 1772 in Henfield. Her
mother's name was recorded as Elizabeth.
