and Sarah KING (1836-1902)

Stephen Beard and Sarah King married in the first quarter of 1858 in the Cuckfield registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Stephen Beard was baptised on 6 June 1830 in Fletching, Sussex.  He was the son of George Beard (1792-1845) and Elizabeth Pearce (1793-1844).  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer of Chelwood Common.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was 11 years old and living with his parents and siblings on Chelwood Common in Fletching.

Sarah King was baptised on 21 August 1836 in Newick, Sussex.  She was the daughter of George King and Esther Peckham.  The baptism register noted that her father was a paper maker from Sharps in Barcombe.  Sarah died aged 65 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1902 in the Brighton registration district.

In 1861 the couple and 2 children (Richard H and Thomas) were living at Naldred, Balcombe Lane in Cuckfield.  They were sharing the property with the family of 38 year old Warden Beard.  Stephen was then a 31 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 26.  His place of birth was recorded as Ditchling and hers as Barcombe.

When the 1871 census was recorded the couple and 4 children (Richard, Harriett, Emma, Margaret and George) were living at 19 Magdelene Street, Brighton.  Stephen was a 41 year old day labourer and Sarah was 30.  He gave his place of birth as Dane Hill and she as Barcombe.

The 1881 census recorded that Sarah was a 46 year old laundress, born in Barcombe, and she and her daughter Margaret were lodging in the home of Ebenezer Burfield at 11 Freehold Terrace in Preston, Sussex.

In 1901 Sarah was a 67 year old widow and living at 25 Newmarket Road, Brighton, in the home of the family of 37 year old Henry J. Watts and his 39 year old wife Eliza.
