Richard Henry BEARD (1861-1925)

and Annie WATKINS (1862-1926)

Richard Beard and Annie Watkins married on 25 December 1879 at St. Peter's in Brighton, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)  (Need to check original certificate to confirm names of fathers and any other details.)

Richard Henry Beard was born in the fourth quarter of 1861 in Brighton, Sussex and baptised on 22 December 1861 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.  The baptism register noted that his father was a fishmonger of 13 George Street.  He was the son of Richard Beard (1830-?) and Anne Young (c1841-?).  When the 1871 census was recorded he was a 9 year old scholar and living with his parents and siblings at 13 George Street, Brighton.  Richard died aged 64 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1925 in the Brighton registration district.

Ann Watkins was born in the third quarter of 1862 in Brighton, Sussex and baptised on 5 October 1862 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer of Spa Street, Brighton.  She was the daughter of William Henry Watkins (1833-?) and Ann (c1833-?).  When the 1871 census was recorded, Anne Watkins was 9 years old and living with her parents and siblings at 1 Spa Street, Brighton.  Annie died aged 63 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1926 in the Brighton registration district.

In 1881 the couple and young son Richard were living in Sussex Street, Brighton.  Richard was a 20 year old general hawker and Annie a 19 year old ironer.  They were all born in Brighton.

At the time of the 1891 census the couple and 5 children (Richard W, Annie, Willie, Daisy and Edith K.) were living at 44 Albion Street, Brighton.  Richard was a  30 year old greengrocers hawker and Annie as 28.  They were all born in Brighton.

When the 1901 census was recorded the couple and 10 children (Annie, William, Daisy, Edith, Ernest, Ethel, Florence, Samuel, John and Elizabeth) were living at 32 Richmond Buildings in Brighton.  Richard was a 40 year old daily greengrocery hawker and Annie was 38.  They and all their children were born in Brighton.  Also with the the family was 7 year old niece Alice Johnson and unmarried 22 year old boarder Harry Hughes who was a stableman.

In 1911 the couple and 8 children (Daisy, Edith Kate, Ernest, Samuel, John, Bessie, Frank and Christabell) were living at 19 Ivory Place, Brighton.  Also with them was 79 year old mother and widow Ann Watkins who had been born in Twineham, Sussex.  Richard was then a 50 year old hawker and Annie a 49 year old ironer in a laundry.  They said they had been married 31 years and had had 17 children, 13 of whom were living and 4 had died.
