Richard BEARD (1830-1890)

and Ann YOUNG (c1840-?)

Richard Beard and Ann Young married in the fourth quarter of 1858 in the Brighton, Sussex registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)  (Need to check original certificate to confirm names of fathers and any other details.)

Richard Beard was baptised on 19 December 1830 in Brighton, Sussex.  He was the son of John Beard and Elizabeth Hooper.  The baptism register noted that his father was a bricklayer of Pimlico.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was 9 years old and living with his parents and siblings in Pimlico, Brighton.  In 1851 he was an unmarried 21 year old day labourer and living with his parents at 79 Pimlico, Brighton.  Richard may have died aged 62 years and his death registered in the fourth quarter of 1890 in the Brighton registration district.

Ann Young was born about 1840 in Brighton, Sussex.  Might she have been baptised on Anna Sutton Young on 13 October 1839 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, the daughter of Sarah Young of 2 Nelson Street?  Or was she baptised on 5 November 1837 at St. Nicholas, the daughter of Thomas Young and Sarah, a shoemaker of Wood Street?  (A database at Ancestry.co.uk notes that her father's name was James.  The same database also notes she died in 1901 aged 64 and that her death was registered in the second quarter of 1901 in the Lewes registration district.)

When the 1871 census was recorded the couple and 7 children (Ellen, Ann, Richard, Emma, Minnie, Maud and Elizabeth) were living at 13 George Street, Brighton.  Richard was a 41 year old fish monger and Anne was 31.  They and their children were all born in Brighton.

In 1881 the couple and 8 children (Minnie, Maud, Elizabeth, Frank, William, Sarah, Samuel and Kate) were living at 12 George Street, Brighton.  Richard was then a 52 year old fishmonger and Annie was 42.  They were all said to have been born in Brighton.

By the time of the 1891 census Annie Beard was a 51 year old widow and fish dealer.  She was living at 12 George Street, Brighton along with 5 children (Sarah, Samuel, Katie, Alice and Daisy).
