John BEARD (c1793-?)

and Elizabeth HOOPER (?-?)

John Beard and Elizabeth Hooper married by banns on 20 September 1818 in Brighton, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.  (They were not my direct ancestors.) (Need to check original register for names of witnesses and any other details.)

John Beard was born about 1793 in Brighton, Sussex as per the 1851 census.  Might he have been baptised on 6 April 1799 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, the son of John Beard and Lucy Lulham?  (They married on 31 January 1793 in Brighton.)  John's death may have been registered in the second quarter of 1852 in the Brighton registration district, or he may have died aged 78 years and his death registered in the first quarter of 1871, also in Brighton.  (A database at Ancestry.co.uk notes he was baptised on 31 July 1792 in Lewes, Sussex, the son of Edward Beard (1761-1850) and Elizabeth Pettet (1769-1860).  However, that John died aged 2 months and Edward and Elizabeth had another son John baptised in 1800.)

Elizabeth Hooper may have been born about 1793/4.  Might she have been the daughter of Abraham Hooper and Sarah Gates who married on 11 March 1788 in Goring, Sussex?  (No possible baptism recorded in the IGI or SFHG's database.)

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 4 children (George, Abel, Richard and Lucy) were living in Pimlico, Brighton.  John and Elizabeth were both said to be 46 years old and he was a bricklayer.

The 1851 census recorded that John was a 58 year old bricklayer's labourer and living at 79 Pimilco, Brighton along with his 58 year old wife Lucy and 3 children (Abraham, Richard and Lucy).  They were all born in Brighton.  (I don't know if Elizabeth had died and John remarried, or whether Elizabeth's name was wrongly recorded in the census.)
