William BAXTER (1736-1806)

and Mary NEWELL (1748-1829)

William Baxter and Mary Newell were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 15 April 1765 in Cocking, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Cocking.  The witnesses to the marriage were John Bettesworth and William Gill.  The bride, groom and witnesses all made their X marks.

William Baxter may have been baptised on 15 August 1736 in Cocking and have been the son of Henry Baxter (1698-1766) and Constance Hall (1702-?).  He may have been buried on 5 April 1806 in Cocking, but the burial register only records his name.  However, there was another William Baxter who was baptised on 4 April 1724 in Cocking who was the son of  Nicholas Baxter (1693-1768) and Hannah Ayling (1703-1780).

Mary Newill may have been baptised on 5 February 1747/8 in Easebourne, Sussex and have been the daughter of William Newill and Mary.  A Mary Baxter died aged 87 years and was buried on 23 January 1829 in Cocking (i.e. born about 1742).

William Baxter and Mary Newell had 5 known children:

  1. Mary Baxter, my 5x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 5 March 1767/8 in Cocking.

Mary had an illegitimate son by William Sawyer:

    1. John Siferse Baxter, my 4x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 27 June 1790 in Cocking.  As John Baxter he married Anne Pearcey in 1812.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Edmund Baxter was baptised 4 June 1769 in Cocking.  He married Ann Hewett in 1796.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Margaret Baxter was baptised on 28 December 1774 in Cocking.  She may have been buried on 30 March 1777 in Cocking, but the burial register only records a name.

  4. George Baxter was baptised on 18 November 1778 in Cocking.

  5. Sarah Baxter was baptised on 6 July 1783 in Cocking.
