William BATUP (c1740-?)

and Mary HODGES (c1750-?)

William Batup and Mary Hodges married by banns on 12 June 1769 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor of Henfield and she was a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Hodges and William Vinall.  (They were my not direct ancestors.)

William Batup's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He may have been buried on 2 March 1800 in West Grinstead.

Mary Hodges date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

William Batup and Mary Hodges had 3 known children:

  1. William Beteup was baptised on 10 December 1769 in Bolney, Sussex.

William married Charlotte Burgess on 10 August 1797 in Ashurst.  He was from West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Burgess and Sarah Baytopp.

Charlotte, wife of William Baytop was buried on 10 April 1806 in West Grinstead.

William and Charlotte had the following children:

    1. William Baytopp was baptised on 1 July 1798 in Ashurst and/or West Grinstead.

    2. Thirza Baytopp was baptisedon 21 January 1800 in West Grinstead.  She also seems to have been baptised as Tipzah Baytopp on 20 March 1800 in Ashurst, at which time her parents were from West Grinstead.  Thirza married William Millyard on 27 October 1820 in Steyning, Sussex.

    3. Jane Baytopp was baptised on 17 February 1804 in West Grinstead.

    4. Abel Baytopp was baptised on 7 April 1806 in Ashurst, at which time his parents were form West Grinstead.  He also seems to have been baptised on 10 April 1806 in West Grinstead.

Abel may have married twice, firstly to Frances Glazebrook by banns on 17 January 1829 in Cowfold.  He may then have married Emma Parker by banns on 30 November 1837 in Lancing, Sussex.  However, he was then said to be a bachelor and labourer from Ashurst, and she was a 20 year old spinster from Lancing.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Baytopp, a blacksmith and Thomas Parker a labourer.

Abel and Emma had the following child:

      1. John Baytock was baptised on 5 January 1845 in West Grinstead.

      2. Frances Baytop was baptised on 9 May 1847 in West Grinstead.

  2. Sarah Beatup was baptised on 2 November 1774 in Ashurst.  She had an illegitimate son:

    1. William Elliott Baytopp was baptised on 23 March 1798 in Ashurst.

Sarah married Zedekiah Elliott by licence on 4 December 1806 in Ashurst.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Baytupp and James Botting.  Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of Chichester which recorded that she was a 32 year old spinster from Ashurst and he was a 30 year old bachelor and gent from the same place.  Surety for the licence was provided by Zedekiah himself and William Baytupp a blacksmith of Ashurst.

  3. Jenny Beatup was baptised on 8 October 1784 in Ashurst.

Jenny married John Agate by banns on 1 August 1804 in Ashurst.  He was a bachelor from West Grinstead and she was a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Baytopp and Sarah Baytopp.
