William BATUP
(c1740-?)
and Mary HODGES (c1750-?)

William Batup and Mary Hodges married by banns on 12
June 1769 in Henfield, Sussex. He was then a bachelor of Henfield and
she was a spinster. The witnesses to their marriage were
Thomas Hodges and William Vinall.
(They were my not direct ancestors.)
William Batup's date and place of birth/baptism are
unknown, to me. He may have been buried on 2 March 1800 in West
Grinstead.
Mary Hodges date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to
me.
William Batup and
Mary Hodges had 3 known
children:

William
Beteup was baptised on 10 December 1769 in Bolney, Sussex.
William married Charlotte Burgess on 10 August 1797 in
Ashurst. He was from West Grinstead. The witnesses to their
marriage were William Burgess and Sarah Baytopp.
Charlotte, wife of William Baytop was buried on 10
April 1806 in West Grinstead.
William and Charlotte had the following children:

William Baytopp was baptised on 1 July 1798 in Ashurst
and/or West Grinstead.

Thirza Baytopp was baptisedon 21 January 1800 in West
Grinstead. She also seems to have been baptised as
Tipzah Baytopp on 20 March 1800 in Ashurst, at which time
her parents were from West Grinstead. Thirza married
William Millyard on 27 October 1820 in Steyning, Sussex.

Jane Baytopp was baptised on 17 February 1804 in West
Grinstead.

Abel Baytopp was baptised on 7 April 1806 in Ashurst, at
which time his parents were form West Grinstead. He also seems
to have been baptised on 10 April 1806 in West Grinstead.
Abel may have married twice, firstly to Frances Glazebrook
by banns on 17 January 1829 in Cowfold. He may then have
married Emma Parker by banns on 30 November 1837 in
Lancing, Sussex. However, he was then said to be a bachelor
and labourer from Ashurst, and she was a 20 year old spinster from
Lancing. The witnesses to their marriage were William
Baytopp, a blacksmith and Thomas Parker a
labourer.
Abel and Emma had the following child:

John Baytock was baptised on 5 January 1845 in
West Grinstead.

Frances Baytop was baptised on 9 May 1847 in
West Grinstead.

Sarah
Beatup was baptised on 2 November 1774 in Ashurst. She
had an illegitimate son:

William Elliott Baytopp was baptised on 23 March 1798 in
Ashurst.
Sarah married
Zedekiah Elliott by licence on 4 December 1806 in
Ashurst. The witnesses to their marriage were William
Baytupp and James Botting.
Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the
Archdeaconry of Chichester which recorded that she was a 32 year old
spinster from Ashurst and he was a 30 year old bachelor and gent from
the same place. Surety for the licence was provided by Zedekiah
himself and William Baytupp a blacksmith of Ashurst.

Jenny
Beatup was baptised on 8 October 1784 in Ashurst.
Jenny married John Agate by banns on 1 August 1804 in
Ashurst. He was a bachelor from West Grinstead and she was a
spinster. The witnesses to their marriage were William
Baytopp and Sarah Baytopp.
