Richard BAYTUP (1782-?)

and Elizabeth STEAR (?-?)

Richard Baytup and Elizabeth Stear married by banns on 6 April 1807 in Ditchling, Sussex.  They were both then said to be of Ditchling.  (They were my not direct ancestors.)

Richard Baytup was baptised on 9 June 1782 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Baytup (c1760-?) and Martha Mitchell.

Elizabeth Stear's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

Richard Baytup and Elizabeth Stear had 8 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Baytop was baptised on 3 August 1807 in Nuthurst.

  2. Richard Baytop was baptised on 15 July 1808 in Nuthurst.

  3. Ann Baytop was baptised on 3 June 1810 in Nuthurst.  Ann may have had an illegitimate son:

    1. Walter Bowell Baytop was baptised on 19 March 1826 in Shipley.

Might Ann have married John Rhodes by banns on 1 October 1831 in Shipley?  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Shipley.

  4. Charles Baytop was baptised on 23 February 1812 in Nuthurst.  The 1841 census records that he was a 25 year old agricultural labourer living at Brook Farm in Nuthurst, the home of James Carter.

Charles married Caroline Gasson in the third quarter of 1842 in the Horsham registration district.

In 1851 the couple were living at Crab Tree in Lower Beeding and Charles was a 40 year old agricultural labourer.  Caroline was 31 and gave her place of birth as Nuthurst.  Also with them was their 10 year old son James Gasson who was a scholar.

Caroline was baptised on 6 April 1823 in Nuthurst and was the daughter of James Gasson and Elizabeth.

  5. Harriet Baytop was baptised on 13 November 1814 in Nuthurst.

  6. John Baytup was baptised on 27 April 1817 in Nuthurst.  He married Sarah Clarke in 1849.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Henry Baytop was baptised on 30 July 1820 in Nuthurst.

  8. Edward Baytop was baptised on 9 March 1823 in Nuthurst.

Edward married Elizabeth Jane Daniels on 22 March 1843 in Nuthurst.

Edward and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. William Baytup was baptised on 26 January 1845 in Nuthurst.

    2. Betsy Baytop was baptised on 21 May 1848 in Nuthurst.

    3. Maria Ann Baytup was baptised on 18 March 1861 in Erith, Kent.

    4. Harriet Ellen Baytup was born in 1864 in Erith.
