John BAYTUP (1817-?)

and Sarah CLARKE (1825-?)

John Baytup and Sarah Clarke married on 4 November 1849 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  (They were my not direct ancestors.)

John Baytup was baptised on 27 April 1817 in Nuthurst.  He was the son of Richard Baytup (1782-?) and Elizabeth Stear.

Sarah Clark was baptised on 22 May 1825 in Horsham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Jesse Clark and Ann Nye.

When the 1861 census was recorded the couple and 5 children were living at Park in Shermanbury, Sussex.  John was then a 45 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 37.

In 1871 the couple and 8 children were living at Nyes Hill in Bolney.  John was then a 55 year old carter on a farm and Sarah was 48.

By 1881 the couple had moved to Buttons Farm in West Grinstead, Sussex.  John was then a 63 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 57.  They had 3 of their children living at home with them on census night.

John Baytup and Sarah Clarke had 11 known children:

Elizabeth Ann married John Akehurst by banns on 29 July 1871 in Cowfold.  She was then said to be from Bolney and the daughter of John Baytop a labourer.  John was also a labourer and the son of John Akehurst, a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Kaziah Akehurst and Peter Woolven.

  2. William Henry Baytup was born about 1851 and baptised on 31 October 1855 in Nuthurst.  He died aged 6 years and was buried on 6 December 1857 in Warnham.
