John BAYTUP (c1753-1837)

and Mary CLARK (c1761-1830)

John Batcup and Mary Clark married by banns on 17 October 1781 in Cowfold, Sussex.  They were both then of Cowfold.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Baytup and Walter Hills.  (They were my not direct ancestors.)

John Baytup may have been born about 1753.  He died aged 84 years and was buried on 14 November 1837 in Bolney.  Might he have been the son of Thomas Baytup (c1730-1787) and Martha Gander (c1734-1814)?  A settlement examination was undertaken on 10 May 1783 of John Bateup son of Thomas Bateup.  John was then said to have been a timber hewer and had been born in Cowfold and that his father had been a parishioner for 20 years.  In 1766-67, John was hired by Edmund Cobby a farmer of West Grinstead.

Mary Clark may have been born about 1761.  She died aged 69 years and was buried on 19 December 1830 in Bolney.

On 23 July 1786 a settlement certificate was granted to John Baytup and his wife Mary and their children 4 year old John and 18 month old Mary, to settle in Cowfold from West Grinstead.

John Baytup and Mary Clark had 5 known children:

  1. John Baytup was baptised on 20 October 1782 in Cowfold.  He married Sarah Stoffold in 1803.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Mary Baytup was baptised on 20 January 1785 in Cowfold.  She may have married Thomas Steele by banns on 6 August 1803 in Cowfold.  The witnesses to the marriage were Sarah Blaker and John Baytup.

  3. Ann Baytup was baptised on 15 July 1792 in Bolney.  She died aged 20 years and was buried on 11 December 1812 in Bolney.

  4. Jenny Baytup was baptised on 12 July 1795 in Bolney.

  5. Susan Baytup was baptised on 15 April 1798 in Bolney.  As Susanna Baytup she married Henry Plummer by banns on 16 September 1818 in Bolney.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Baytup and Elizabeth Baytup.
