Edward BEITEUP
(c1715-?)
and Jane COBLY (c1720-1769)

Edward Beiteup and Jane Cobly married by banns on 21
May 1744 in West Grinstead, Sussex. The were both then from West
Grinstead, Sussex. (They were my not direct ancestors.)
Edward Beiteup's date and place of birth/baptism are
unknown, to me. He was most probably the son of Thomas Baytop
and Catherine (?-1734) who settled in West Grinstead in
1718, having previously lived in Wadhurst, Sussex. A settlement
certificate mentioned that Thomas and Catherine had a son named Edward. However, an
Edward Bateup, senior was buried on 18 March 1737/8 in West
Grinstead.
Jane Cobly's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown,
to me. Might her surname have been Cobby? The wife of
Edward Bateup was buried on 4 January 1769 in West Grinstead.
Unfortunately her forename was not recorded in the burial register.
Edward Beiteup and
Jane Cobly had 7 known
children:
-
Katherine Bateup was baptised on 5 August 1744 in West
Grinstead.
Katherine married Jasper Bates by banns on
25 October 1767 in West Grinstead. They were both then of West
Grinstead. The witnesses to their marriage were Samuel
Cobbey and James Stiles.
Jasper was baptised on 21 October 1744 in Nuthurst and was the son of
James Bates and Mary Cheeseman.
Jasper and Katherine had the following children:
-
Jane Bates was baptised on 25 October 1767 in West
Grinstead.
-
Ann
Bates was baptised on 12 October 1772 in West Grinstead.
-
Jasper Bates was baptised on 25 June 1775 in West
Grinstead.
-
William Bates was baptised on 1 June 1777 in West
Grinstead. William married Jane Botting by
banns on 23 April 1799 in West Grinstead. The witnesses to
their marriage were Mary Bates and Richard
Mitchell.
-
James Bates was baptised on 20 February 1780 in West
Grinstead.
James married Jane Venn by banns on 14 October 1801
in West Grinstead. The witnesses to their marriage were
Sarah Sayers and William Gratwick.
James and Jane had the following child:
-
Jasper Bates was baptised on 14 March 1802 in
West Grinstead. He may have married Barbara
Monnery by banns on 29 March 1825 in Shipley. He
was then a bachelor. The witnesses to their marriage were
Lucy Peaceable and Joseph Peirce.
-
John Bates was baptised on 2 June 1782 in West Grinstead.
-
Edward Bates was baptised on 6 October 1784 in West
Grinstead.
-
Mary Bates was baptised on 12 December 1784 in West
Grinstead.
-
Mary
Bateup was baptised on 11 February 1745/6 in West Grinstead.
The baptism register noted that her mother's name was also Mary, but I
think that was probably an error. She may have been buried as
Mary Grant on 17 February 1779 in West Grinstead.
Mary married William
Grant by banns on 5 April 1768 in West Grinstead. They
were both then of West Grinstead. The witnesses to their marriage
were Jasper Bates and James Stiles.
William may have been baptised on 10 July 1737 in West Grinstead, the
son of Thomas Grant, at which time his
father was from Nuthurst.
William and Mary had the following children:
-
John Grant was buried on 8 August 1771 in West Grinstead.
The burial register noted that he was the son of William and Mary.
-
James Grant was buried on 8 August 1771 in West Grinstead.
The burial register noted that he was the son of William and Mary.
-
Jane Grant was baptised on 29 May 1776 in West Grinstead.
-
Elizabeth Batup was baptised on 23 January 1747/8 in West
Grinstead.
-
Edward
Batup, a twin, was baptised on 30 November 1751 in West
Grinstead.
-
Jane
Batup, a twin, was baptised on 30 November 1751 in West
Grinstead and buried there on 6 December 1751.
-
Ann
Bateup was baptised on 4 January 1754 in West Grinstead.
-
Barbara
Batehup was baptised on 6 January 1758 in West Grinstead.
Barbara married Joseph Soper by banns on 18 November
1783 in West Grinstead. They were both then of West Grinstead.
The witnesses to their marriage were John Pollard and
Richard Stiles.
Joseph and Barbara had the following child:
-
John Soper was baptised on 8 August 1784 in West Grinstead.
Might they have been the parents of:
-
Joseph Soper Baytup married Jane Page by
licence on 24 April 1795 in Hellingly, Sussex. Their marriage
licence was issued on 23 April 1795 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes,
which recorded that he was a bachelor and potter of Hellingly, aged
21 years and upwards (therefore, born about 1774). Jane was a
22 year old and upwards spinster of Chalvington. Surety for
the licence was provided by Joseph himself and Thomas Guy
a farmer of Chalvington.
