and Sarah SIMMONS
(c1807-1885)

Jacob Batchelor and Sarah Simmons married
by banns on 3 March 1829 in Ifield, Sussex. He was then a bachelor of
Petworth and she a spinster of Ifield. The witnesses to their marriage
were Philip Capon and Jane Edwards.
(They were not my direct ancestors.)
Jacob Batchelor was born about 1803 in Rusper, Sussex.
He died aged 73 years and his death was registered in the third quarter of
1876 in the Horsham registration district.
Sarah Simmons was born about 1807 in Slaugham or Ifield,
Sussex. She died aged 78 years and her death was registered in the
second quarter of 1885 in the Horsham registration district.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and their 7 children were
living at Bonwick in Rusper. Jacob was then said to be a 30 year old
agricultural labourer and Sarah was 35. Also with the family was 66
year old Thomas Batchelor who was also an agricultural
labourer. (Thomas Batchelor was baptised on 1 October
1775 in Rusper, the son of John Batchelor and Sarah
Robson, who had married on 16 December 1762 in Rusper. They
also had a son named Jacob Batchelor who was baptised on 15
April 1766 in Rusper.)
In 1851, Jacob was a 48 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 44.
He gave his place of birth as Rusper and she as Slaugham. With them on
census night were 8 of their children. They were then living in part
of Bonwicks Cottage, Rusper.
At the time the 1861 census was recorded the family were living in Rusper.
Jacob was a 58 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 54. Their
2 youngest daughters were with them along with their married son William and
his wife Eliza.
The 1871 census recorded that the couple were living in Rusper along with
their son Jacob and 63 year old unmarried brother James Batchelor.
Jacob was then a 68 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 64 and she
said she was born in Ifield. (In 1851, James was an unmarried 43 year
old servant at Whitehale Farm in Ifield. By 1861, James was a 54 year
old servant and agricultural labourer living in the home of Henry
Longhurst at Burchatt in Abinger, Surrey.)

James Batchelor was baptised on 27 September 1829 in
Rusper. He was 11 years old in 1841.

Marianne Batchelor was baptised on 26 February 1832 in
Rusper. Mary Ann was 9 years old in 1841. In 1851 she was a
1 year old servant out of place and living with her parents.
Mary Ann married Henry Scott by banns on 1 May 1852 in
Horsham. He was a bachelor and labourer and she a 20 year old
spinster. Their fathers were named as Edward Scott
and Jacob Batchelor who were both labourers. The
witnesses to their marriage were Mary Ann Scott and
R. Collins.
Henry was baptised on 25 November 1827 in Horsham and was the son of
Edward Scott and Mary Anne Tobutt.

Horsham.

Horsham.

Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
chimney sweep.

Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
sweep.

Annie Scott was baptised on 28 March 1868 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that her father was a
bricklayer.

George Ernest Scott was baptised on 3 July 1870 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
bricklayer.

William Charles Scott was baptised on 13 April 1873
in Horsham.

Edwin Scott was baptised on 22 Octobe 1876 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
bricklayer.

Arthur James Scott was baptised on 17 May 1880 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
bricklayer.

Jacob Batchelor was baptised on 28 July 1833 in Rusper.
He was 7 years old in 1841. In 1871 he was an
unmarried 37 year agricultural labourer and he was the only one of his
siblings living at home with his parents.

He was 6 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 15 year old
agricultural labourer living with his parents.

William Batchelor was baptised on 21 April 1839 in
Rusper. He was 2 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was 11 years
old.
William married Eliza Manvell by banns on 16 December
1860 in Horsham. He was a 21 year old bachelor and labourer from
Rusper. She was a 20 year old spinster. Their fathers were
named as Jacob Bachelor and Charles Manvell
who were both labourers. The witnesses to their marriage were
Henry Scott and R. Collins.
In 1881, William was a 42 year old agricultural labourer and living at
Worlds End, Bensons Lane, Horsham, with his 41 year old wife, Eliza and
their 6 children and 11 month old niece Alice Batchelor.
Eliza was born on 21 January 1840 and baptised on 23 February 1840 in
Horsham. She was the daughter of Charles Manvell
and Elizabeth Dinnage.
William and Eliza had the following children:

Horsham. He was a 15 year old agricultural labourer in 1881.

Horsham. She was 14 years old in 1881.

Rusper. She was a month old at the time of the 1841 census.
The 1851 census recorded that she was 8 years old.
Caroline married Edward Reader by banns on 15 May 1865
in Horsham. He was a 24 year old bachelor and labourer, and she
was a 23 year old spinster. Their fathers were named as
Charles Reader a shoemaker and Jacob Batchelor
a farmer. The witnesses to their marriage were R.
Collins and M. Boxall.

Charles Batchelor was baptised on 10 September 1843 in
Rusper and buried there on 25 September 1846.

Harriet Batchelor was baptised on 4 January 1846 in
Rusper. In 1851 she was 5 years old.

Frances Batchelor was baptised on 16 July 1848 in
Rusper. In 1851, Fanny was 3 years old. Frances was 12 years
old in 1851.

Selina Batchelor was baptised on 8 December 1850 in
Rusper. At the time of the 1851 census she was 4 months old.
