Edward BATCHELOR (1783-?)

and Ann STEVENS (c1787-1822)

and Lucy TULET (1792-1874)

Edward Batchelor married twice, firstly to Ann Stevens on 3 November 1810 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.  He then married Lucy Tulet by banns on 2 March 1824 in Lindfield, Sussex.  He was a widower and she a spinster, and they were both of Lindfield.  The witnesses were William Baker and Elizabeth Gowen.  All bar Lucy signed their names.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Lucy was the sister of my 3x Great Grandfather, William Tulet.)

Edward Batchelor was baptised on 15 June 1783 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was the son of John Batchelor (c1752-1816) and Jane Peters (c1754-1823) who had married in 1782 in Bolney.

Ann Stevens date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 35 years and was buried on 2 December 1822 in Lindfield.

Lucy Tulet was baptised on 8 July 1792 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter James Tulet (1764-1841) and Sarah French (1765-1840).  She may have died aged 86 years in the second quarter of 1874.

When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living in Lindfield village and Edward was a master blacksmith.

Edward Batchelor and Ann Stevens had 4 known children:

  1. Naomi Batchelor was baptised on 14 February 1813 in Cuckfield.

  2. Mary Batchelor was baptised on 12 May 1815 in Hurstpierpoint.

  3. Harriet Batchelor was baptised on 27 August 1820 in Cuckfield.

  4. Edward Batchelor was baptised on 17 November 1822 in Lindfield.  He was an unmarried 29 year old blacksmtih in 1851 and living in the parental home.

Edward Batchelor and Lucy Tulet had 6 known children:

  1. William Batchelor was baptised on 23 January 1825 in Lindfield.  In 1851 he was an unmarried 27 year old blacksmith living with his parents.

  2. George Batchelor was baptised on 7 January 1827 in Lindfield.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was a 54 year old blacksmith living in Brook Street, Cuckfield along with his wife and children.

  3. James Batchelor was baptised on 14 September 1828 in Lindfield.

  4. Eliza Batchelor was born in about 1830 in Lindfield.  At the time of the 1851 census she was an unmarried 21 year old dressmaker living at home.

  5. Thomas Batchelor was baptised on 10 March 1833 in Lindfield.  In 1851 he was an 18 year old blacksmith living at home.

  6. Charles Batchelor was baptised on 20 September 1835 in Lindfield.  He may have died aged 72 years in the third quarter of 1906.  In 1851 he was a 16 year old scholar living at home.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was a 46 year old ostler living in the High Street, Lindfield with his wife and children.  He may have married twice and his second marriage may have been to Betsy Ellis in the third quarter of 1875.
