George BASHFORD (1848-1909)

and Emily GUILE (1853-?)


George Bashford and Emily Guile married on 31 July 1875 in West Tarring, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors, although they were the Great Grandparents of my cousins.)

George Bashford was born on 10 March 1848 in Crowhurst, Surrey.  He was the son of Benjamin Bashford (1804-?) and Sarah Thatcher.  He died aged 61 years and his death was registerd in the fourth quarter of 1909 in the East Preston registration district.  The 1891 census records that he was born in Kingston-on-Thames and in1901 his birth place was given as Kingston, Surrey.

Emily Guiel was born on 11 November 1853 in Heene, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Reuben Guile (1827-1901) and Lucy Hobden (1822-1903)  She was baptised on 11 January 1854 in the parish church in Heene, at which time her father was a labourer of Little Heene.  When the 1861 census was recorded she was a 7 year old scholar living with her parents and siblings at 9 Little Heene, Heene.  Her father was then an agricultural labourer.

When the 1881 census was recorded Emily was said to be 24 years old.  She was then lodging with her 2 daughters at 24 Chapel Street in Broadwater, the home of unmarried 83 year old Mary Ayling.  It was noted that her husband was a fisherman and that he was away.  George was back on dry land in 1891 and the family were living at 1 Cooks Row in Broadwater.  He was then a 40 year old fisherman and Emily was a 35 year old laundress.  In 1901 the family were living at 10 Station Road in Worthing and George was a mariner.  Also with them on census night were 2 grandchildren, 4 year old Ethel May Bashford and William Bashford aged 2.


George Bashford and Emily Guile had 9 known children:

  1. Emily Bashford was born in the first quarter of 1876 in Worthing.  She was 5 years old when the 1881 census was recorded.  In 1891 she was a 15 year old laudress's assistant.

    Emily married Henry Deacon.  Henry and Emily had 7 known children:

    1. Molly Deacon

    2. Dorothy Maud Deacon (1895-1984).  She married a Birchfield.

    3. Ethel Victoria Deacon was born in 1901.

    4. Rosie Irene Deacon was born in 1906.

    5. Ernest Frederick Deacon was born in 1907.

    6. Jack William Deacon was born in 1910.

    7. Nellie Deacon was born in 1910.  She married Lloyd Brookes.

  2. Annie Clara Bashford was born in the first quarter of 1880 in Worthing.  She was a year old in 1881.  In 1891 she was an 11 year old.  Did she marry a Moody?

  3. George Bashford was born on 16 March 1882 in Worthing and baptised on 15 June 1882 in Broadwater.  He died in 1962 at 69 Portland Road, Worthing.  In 1891 he was a 9 year old scholar.  He was an 18 year old mariner in 1901 and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

    George married Lilian Ethel Portlock in the second quarter of 1911 in the East Preston registration district.

    Lilian was born in 1882 in Brighton and was the daughter of Joseph Harwood Portlock and Emily Feest.  She died on 27 January 1965 at 69 Portland Road in Worthing.

    George and Lilian had 5 known children.

  4. Reuben Giles Bashford was born in the second quarter of 1894 in Worthing.  He was killed in action on 30 June 1916 at Loos, Pas de Calais in France.  He was then a Private in the 13th Batallion of the Royal Sussex Regiment.  When the 1891 census was recorded he was a 7 year old scholar.  In 1901 he was a 16 year old sweet factory hand.

  5. Lucy Martha Bashford was born in the third quarter of 1886 in Worthing.  She was a 5 year old scholar in 1891.  In 1901 she was 14 years old in 1901.

  6. Alice Bashford was born in the first quarter of 1889 in Worthing.  In 1891 she was 2 years old.  She was 12 years old in 1901.

  7. Kate Bashford was born in 1891 in Worthing.  When the 1891 census was recorded she was 3 weeks old.

  8. Violet Beatrice Bashford was born on 21 February 1894.  She married David William Gathern in 1919.  (They have their own page.)

  9. Dorothy Maud Bashford was born in the first quarter of 1895 in Worthing.  She was 6 years old in 1901.
