Nicholas BARHAM
(c1585-1652)
and Mary BARHAM (c1580-1673)

Nicholas Barham
and Mary Barham
were my 10x Great Grandparents.
to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married by licence on 24 July 1615 at
St. Clement's in Hastings, Sussex. At the time Mary was a widow.
She had first married John Holland the younger of Lamberhurst on 20
June 1603 in Tonbridge, Kent. Nicholas and Mary's marriage licence was
dated 19 July 1615 and Thomas Mercer a tanner of Wadhurst provided
surety. On the same day a marriage licence was issued to Thomas
Mercer and Mary Barham, to which Nicholas Barham a yeoman
of Wadhurst provided surety.
Nicholas Barham
was the son of
John
Barham and
Annes Markwick. I would guess that he was born in the 1580's.
His
will was dated 14 November 1652 and proved on 21 May 1653, in which he
left £5 to the poor of Wadhurst. He also mentioned his grandchildren
Elizabeth Elliott (1649-1735),
Ann Elliott (1650-?) and
Constance Elliott (1652-?) children of his daughter Ann,
and
John Barham
(1642-1724) and
Elizabeth Barham (1649-?) children of his daughter Elizabeth. He
appointed his son John Barham as the sole executor. Also mentioned
were son-in-laws William Parkham of Salehurst and David Holland of
Wadhurst. The witnesses to his will were Nicholas Saunders,
William Hendley, George Courthope and ? Dyne (possibly
Gregory Dyne who married Nicholas's widowed daughter Elizabeth on
20 January 1652/3). By the terms of his maternal grandfather's 1592
will, Gregory Markwick, Nicholas was to receive a legacy of forty
shillings. On 17 May 1605 he was appointed a juror on the
case of a drowned child. On 8 April 1610 he was called upon, with
others, to value the estate of
William Kitchenham who had drowned
himself in John Barham's pit.
Mary Barham
was the daughter of
John
Barham (c1525-c1585) and
Mary
Courthope. She was mentioned in her husband's will as "Marie my
loving wife". She was buried on 22 August 1673 as Mary old
widow of Nicholas Barham of Butts.

was baptised on 23 February 1659/60 in Frant, as the daughter of
