Thomas Barden
was baptised on 11 October 1801 in Burwash. He died aged 66
years at Bearhurst in the parish of Stonegate and was buried on 14
November 1866 in Stonegate, Sussex.
He married
Jane Knight by banns on 29 April 1824 in Heathfield. They were
both able to sign their names. The witnesses to the marriage were
Joseph Balcomb (signed) and Elizabeth Barden (marked).
Jane died aged 67 years at Bearehurst farm in the parish of Stonegate and
was buried there on 17 August 1863.

Elizabeth Barden
was baptised on 6 January 1805 in Burwash
and her mother's name was then recorded as Amey.
Elizabeth
married Benjamin Lulham by banns on 24 May 1824 in Heathfield.
Benjamin was of Will...ham, Kent and signed his name, whilst Elizabeth
made her mark. The witnesses were Joseph Balcomb and Jane
Lulham who both signed their names.
Benjamin was
born about 1803. He died between 1851 and 1861.
When the 1841
census was recorded the couple and 8 children were living in the High
Street in Mayfield. Benjamin was then an agricultural labourer.
By 1851 the family had moved to Heathfield. John was then a 48
year old agricultural labourer, and like his wife, gave his place of
birth as Burwash. In 1861 Elizabeth was a 55 year old widow living
at Mount Pleasant in Heathfield. She was then a farmer of 55 acres
of land.
Benjamin and Elizabeth had the following

Lulham was born about 1826 in Heathfield, Sussex. In 1861
he was an unmarried 35 year old gardener living at home with his mother.

Eliza
Lulham was born about 1826 in Warbleton, Sussex. In 1841
she was 15 years. The 1851 census records that she was an
unmarried 24 year old dressmaker living at home with her parents.
Eliza married Henry Covell.

Elizabeth Lulham was born about 1828. She was 13 years
old in 1841.

Benjamin Lulham was born about 1830 in Rotherfield, Sussex.
He was 11 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 20 year old
agricultural labourer.

was baptised on 8 December 1833 in Rotherfield, Sussex. She was 7

census records that she was 5 year old Jane Lulham.
In 1851 Mary was a 14 year old scholar.

3 years old. He was a 13 year old scholar in 1851.

Lulham was born about 1839 in Mayfield. In 1841 she was 2
years old. She was an 11 year old scholar in 1851. Harriet
married George Plumb.

Lulham was baptised on 17 October 1841 in Mayfield, Sussex. In
1851 she was a 9 year old scholar. She married Robert
Chandler.

Henry Lulham was born about 1844 in Heathfield. He was a
6 year old scholar in 1851. In 1861 he was 15 years old and living
with his mother and brothers.

Leonard
Lulham was born about 1847 in Heathfield. In 1851 he was
3 years old. he was 13 years old in 1861.

John Barden
was born on 12 April 1808 in Etchingham
and baptised on 29 May 1808 in Burwash. He died in 1875.
John
married Sarah by banns on 7 September 1831 in Heathfield. Her
name was recorded as Sarah Harmer Mepham, but she signed as
Sarah Mepham Harmer. John also signed his name and they were
both then of Heathfield. The witnesses to the marriage were
George Haffenden (marked) and Charlotte Noakes (signed).
Sarah was born about 1809 in Heathfield and died in 1883.
In 1851
John and family were living at Bohemia, Heathfield and he was an
agricultural labourer.
John and Sarah had 9 known children.

Mary
married George Haffenden by banns on 14 December 1832 in
Heathfield. They were then both of Heathfield and both signed their
names. The witnesses were Thomas Howell (signed),
Elizabeth Lulham (marked) and Benjamin Lulham (signed).
George was baptised on 28 April 1811 in
Heathfield and was the son of John Haffenden and Ann Edwards.

married James Russell on 11 December 1834 in Heathfield. The
witnesses to the marriage were John Barden and Jane Barden.
James was born
about 1812 in Burwash and died in 1892. Might he have been born on
27 April 1810 and baptised on 3 June 1810 at the Independent chapel in
Heathfield, and have been the son of James Russell and Sarah?
James died on 18 April 1892 in the Ticehurst workhouse (ref.
1).
The 1841 census
records that the couple and their 3 daughters were living at Great Pound
Farm in Burwash and James was a farmer. In 1861 the
family were living at Great Pound Farm in Burwash and James was a farmer
of 14 1/2 acres.

She was 5 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.

Russell was baptised on 11 June 1837 in Burwash. At the time
of the 1841 census she was 4 years old. She married
Amos Jenner Akehurst on 25 December 1858 in Burwash. He was
then a bachelor of full age and a dealer of Burwash. She was a
full aged spinster of Burwash. The witnesses to the marriage were
Charles Jenner Akehurst and Elizabeth Jenner Akehurst.
Amos was the son of Edward Jenner Akehurst who was a labourer.

Emily
Russell was baptised on 26 May 1839 in Burwash. In 1841 she
was 2 years old. She married
James Braban on 26 May 1854 in Etchingham, Sussex. He was then
a 23 year old bachelor and labourer of Etchingham and she was a 16 year
old spinster of Etchingham. The witnesses to the marriage were
George Pankhurst and Mary Ann Curtis. James was the son
of James Braban who was also a labourer.

Russell was baptised on 13 March 1842 in Burwash.

Alfred
Russell was baptised on 27 August 1843 in Burwash. In 1861 he
was 17 years old and the eldest of his siblings living at home.
Alfred married
Elmina or Elmenah who was born about 1846 in Heathfield.
When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and their children were
living in Frys Hill Cottages in Burwash and Alfred was an agricultural
labourer. They had the following children:

Joseph Russell was born in Ticehurst, Sussex (as per the 1881
census) and baptised on 7 April 1867 in Burwash, at which time his
father was a labourer. He was a 14 year old agricultural
labourer in 1881.

Russell was born in Biddenden, Kent and baptised on 2 May 1869 in
Burwash, at which time her father was a labourer. She was a 12
year old scholar in 1881.

Russell was born about 1870 in Burwash. She was an 11 year
old scholar in 1881.

Russell was born about 1872 in Brightling, Sussex. He was a
9 year old scholar in 1881.

Albert was born on 27 September 1849 in Pulborough, Sussex and was the
son of James Comper (1812-?) and Ann Hunt

was baptised on 12 July 1818 in
Etchingham.
Jane married Samuel Cornford on 4 December 1838 in
Heathfield. At the time of their marriage Samuel was a farmer of
Warbleton and Jane a spinster of Heathfield. They were both able to
sign their names. The witnesses were Benjamin Lulham and
Thomas Barden, who also both signed their names.
Samuel
was the son of Samuel Cornford who was also a farmer.

Edward Barden
was baptised on 4 August 1822 in
Heathfield. He died in 1870.
Edward married Susan Relfe on
8 March 1843 in Heathfield. At the time of their marriage they were
both minors and both able to sign their names. The witnesses were
James ? (signed) and Harriet Relfe (marked).
Susan was
the daughter of James Relfe.
