John BALDWIN (1843-1905)

and Ann BARHAM (1843-1902)

John Baldwin and Ann Barham married in 1866.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Ann was the sister of my 2x Great Grandmother, Frances Barham.)

John Baldwin was born on 26 November 1843 and baptised on 24 December 1843 in Wadhurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Baldwin (1800-?) and Mary Burridge (1814-?).  His father was a higgler.  John died aged 61 years and his death was registered in the third quarter of 1905 in the Ticehurst registration district.

Ann Barham was born on 19 August 1843 and baptised on 22 October 1843 in Wadhurst, Sussex.  She was the second daughter and fourth child of Nicholas Barham (1814-1896) and Frances Dadswell (1812-1901).  Ann died aged 59 years and her death was registered in the third quarter of 1902 in the Ticehurst registration district.

On 14 July 1866 John and Ann were witnesses to the marriage of her sister Frances Barham to Frederick Edward Boorman, and Ann was still a spinster at that date.

At the time of the 1871 census John and Ann were both 27 years old and living at Fancouch Cottage, Wadhurst, along with their young son.  John was then a steam trasher.  John's parents were also living at Fancouch Cottage in 1871 and his father was then a poulterer.

When the 1881 census was recorded the couple were both aged 37 years and were living at Riseden Farm in Wadhurst along with their 5 children.  John was then a farmer.  Also with them were 21 year old visitor Fanny E. Cork who was an unmarried domestic servant born in Wadhurst and their 15 yeara old general servant Ansley H. Heath who had been born in Rotherfield, Sussex.

In 1891 the family were living in Durgates, Wadhurst and John was an engine fitter and farmer.  The couple were then both aged 47 years and 7 of their children were living with them.  Also with them at that time was 13 year old Eliza Harding who was a general domestic servant who had been born in Wadhurst.

By 1901 the couple were 57 years old and living at Durgates with 3 of their children.  John was then an agricultural engineer and the census noted that he was an employer.
