John BALDING (c1690-?)

and Anne BELLINGHAM (c1695-?)

John Balding and Anne Bellingham may have been my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 6 January 1713/4 at the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Wadhurst, Sussex.

John Balding's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  When his children were baptised he was described as a labourer.  He may have been buried as John Balding on 20 September 1730 in Wadhurst, but the burial register noted that he was a yeoman.  Might he have been the son of John Bauldin and Ann Younge, widow?  They had married in Wadhurst on 16 October 1690.  Previously as Ann May she may have married John Younge, junior on 26 April 1688 in Wadhurst.  Might the 1730 burial have been that of the elder John?  Or, was he baptised as John Baldwynne on 20 October 1689 in Ticechurst, the son of William Baldwin and Mary Smith?  Or, maybe as John Baldwyn was he baptised on 18 March 1687 in Ticehurst, the son of James Baldwin and Ann Downward?

Anne Bellingham's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been the daughter of Thomas Bellingham and Elizabeth Jarrett?  They may have married in 1687 - the banns were called in Wadhurst on 7 April 1687.

John Balding and Anne Bellingham had 6 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Balding was baptised on 16 January 1714/5 in Wadhurst.  As Elizabeth Baldwin might she have married Thomas Woodgate on 1 April 1746 in Frant, Sussex?

  2. Anne Balding, my 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised privately on 2 December 1716 in Wadhurst.  As Ann Baldwin she married John Kitchenham in 1744.  (They have their own page.)  Another Ann Baldwin married William Baker on 14 November 1742 in Ticehurst.

  3. John Balding was baptised on 16 August 1719 in Wadhurst.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

As John Baldwin he may have married Elizabeth Bristow by banns on 8 September 1745 in Wadhurst.  (A database at Ancestry.co.uk, says Elizabeth's husband John was baptised in Ticehurst in 1726, the son of James Baldwin and Catherine.)

John and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. Mary Baldwin was baptised on 25 September 1745 in Wadhurst.

    2. John Baldwin was privately baptised on 26 December 1748 in Wadhurst.

    3. Thomas Baldwin was baptised on 3 November 1751 in Wadhurst.  Was he buried on 1 March 1829 in Hartfield?  Did he marry Elizabeth Weller by banns on 5 May 1774 in Hartfield, Sussex?  They were both of Hartfield.

    4. Anne Baldwin was baptised in February 1756 in Wadhurst.

    5. Anne Baldwin was baptised on 30 June 1757 in Wadhurst.

Might John have also married Mercy Mabb on 10 April 1758 in Wadhurst?

John and Mercy may have had the following children:

    1. Anne Baldwin was baptised in April 1760 in Wadhurst.  A transcript of the baptism register records her mother's name as Mary.  She may have been the mother of:

      1. Mercy Baldwin was baptised on 15 September 1782 in Wadhurst.  She may have married Thomas Wallis by banns on 6 April 1806 in Wadhurst.  They were both then of Wadhurst.  Their son James Wallis may have married Anne Dadswell in 1835.

    2. Edward Baldwin was baptised in August 1761 in Wadhurst.  A transcript of the baptism register records his mother's name as Anne.

    3. Daniel Baldwin was privately baptised on 21 April 1770 in Wadhurst and received into the church on 17 June 1770.  A transcript of the baptism register records he was the son of John and Mercy.  Daniel may have married Margaret Butcher by banns on 14 October 1792 in Wadhurst.  They were both then of Wadhurst.

  4. Mary Balding was privately baptised on 23 December 1723 in Wadhurst and received into the church on the 27th.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.  As Mary Baldwin might she have married John Wickam on 5 October 1758 in Wadhurst?

  5. Philadelphia Balding was baptised on 13 November 1726 in Wadhurst.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

As Philadelphia Baldwin she married Bartholomew Thorp on 2 October 1750 in Tonbridge, Kent.

Bartholomew was baptised on 19 February 1726 in Hadlow, Kent and was the son of Ann Thorp.

Bartholomew and Philidelphia had the following children:

    2. Anne Thorpe was baptised on 12 December 1754 in Hadlow.

    3. Bartholomew Thorpe was baptised on 26 February 1758 in Hadlow.

  6. Thomas Balding was baptised on 27 July 1729 in Wadhurst.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

Many thanks to Keith Baldwin for suggesting that Baldwin may have been Balding and for providing most of the above baptism dates and the burial of John Balding in 1730.
I had been stuck at Ann Baldwin who married John Kitchenham in 1742, but having worked through some earlier Balden and Baldwin families, as follows, I feel fairly confident that Ann Balding baptised in 1716 was the one who married John.
