John BALCOMBE (1867-1908)

and Ellen (c1870-?)

John Balcombe and Ellen married about 1891/2.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Balcombe was born about 1867 in Wadhurst or Ticehurst, Sussex.  He was buried on 8 February 1908, aged 41.  When the 1891 census was recorded, John Balcombe was said to have been an unmarried 23 year old hawker from Ticehurst, Sussex and he was living at 27 Park Street, Tunbridge Wells.

Ellen was born about 1870 in Sevenoaks or Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

When the 1901 census was recorded, John was a 29 year old fish hawker from Wadhurst and Nellie was 28 and from Sevenoaks.  They were living at 43 Park Street, Tunbridge Wells along with their 3 children (William, Nellie and Annie).  By 1911, Ellen was a 41 year old widow and kitchenmaid living at 43 Park Street, Tunbridge Wells, along with her 2 daughters (Ellen and Annie).  Her place of birth was then given as Sevenoak, Tunbridge Wells.

John Balcombe and Ellen had 4 children:

  1. George William Balcombe was born in the second quarter of 1892 in Tunbridge Wells.  He was 9 years old in 1901.

  2. Ellen Josephine Balcombe was born in the fourth quarter of 1893 in Tunbridge Wells.  The 1901 census recorded she was 7 year old Nellie Balcombe.  In 1911, Ellen was a 17 year old general domestic servant.

Ellen married Norman Robinson in 1912.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Ann Elizabeth Balcombe was born fourth quarter of 1896 in Tunbridge Wells.  She was 4 year Annie Balcombe old in 1901.  In 1911 she was a 14 year old scholar.

  4. A fourth child was born and died young.
