Benjamin BAGSHALL (1796-1845)

and Jane SILVESTER (1802-1870)

Benjamin Bagshall and Jane Silvester married by banns on 29 April 1823 in Angmering, Sussex.  They were both then of Angmering.  The witnesses to their marriage were Jonathan Dunford and Charles Caplen.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Benjamin Bagshall was baptised on 19 July 1796 in Ockley, Surrey.  He was the son of William Bagshall and Mary.  He died aged 49 years and was buried on 14 August 1845 at St. Peter the Great, Chichester.  The burial register noted he was from Somers Town.

Jane Silvester was baptised on 28 February 1802 in Patching, Sussex.  She was the daughter of of Thomas Silvester (c1749-1816) and Elizabeth Hill (?-1804).  She died aged 68 years and was buried on 1 July 1870 in Eastbourne, Sussex.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 5 children (Benjamin, William, Edward, John and Jane) were living in George Street in the Sub-deanery of Chichester.  Benjamin was a 45 year old journeyman butcher and Jane was a 35 year old nurse.  He was not born in Sussex, but Jane was.

In 1851, Jane Bagshall was a 48 year old widow, nurse and servant in the home of 88 year old Henry Comper at Little London in Chichester.  She then gave her place of birth as Patching.  Henry was a banker from Pulborough.  Also part of the household was 62 year old widow, nurse and servant, Mary Wadey.  (Jane and Mary were sisters.)

When the 1861 census was recorded, Jane was a 59 year old widow and lodging house keeping at 10 Victoria Place, Eastbourne.  Also with her on census night were 3 of her children (Jane, Esther J. and Jane E.), and unmarried 47 year old lodger Frances Spooner and 46 year old servant Sarah Hunt.  Jane again said she was born in Patching.  Her youngest daughter, Jane E. Bagshall was an 11 year old scholar, born in Chichester - I think it more likely she was a granddaughter.

Benjamin Bagshall and Jane Silvester had 7 known children:

  1. Benjamin Bagshall was baptised on 26 October 1823 at St. Peter the Less, Chichester.  The baptism register noted his father was a butcher of North Street.  The 1841 census noted he was a 15 year old servant.

  2. William Bagshall was baptised on 6 November 1825 at St. Peter the Less, Chichester.  The baptism register noted his father was a butcher of North Street.  He died aged 53 years and was buried on 29 July 1878 at St. Peter the Great, Chichester.  The burial register noted he was from West Lane.  In 1841 he was a 14 year old tallow chandler's apprentice.

    William married Emily.

William and Emily had the following child:

    1. Elizabeth Jane Bagshall was baptised on 26 August 1849 at St. Paul's, Chichester.

  3. Elizabeth Bagshall was baptised on 15 July 1827 at St. Peter the Less, Chichester.  The baptism register noted her father was a butcher of North Street.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was an unmarried 23 year old laundress and the head of her household at 9 Franklin Place, Chichester.  Also with her were her sisters Jane and Fanny and 22 year old cousin Charles Wadey.
