John BECK (1725-?)

and Ann HYLAND (1724-1779)

John Beck and Ann Hyland were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  I believe they married on 14 January 1753/4 at St. Mary the Virgin in Ringmer, Sussex.  However, his name was recorded as John Boxall in the marriage register.  I have not found Boxall children baptised to a John and Ann.  I admit I need to try and find more evidence to prove that this is the correct marriage.

John Beck was baptised on 18 July 1725 in Newhaven, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 8 Daniel Back (1696-?) and Mary Reeve (1699-1736).  John died after 1776.

Ann Hyland was baptised on 10 October 1724 in Ringmer, Sussex.  She was the daughter of George Hyland (c1684-?) and Elizabeth Stanley (1686-1752).  Ann was probably buried on 31 May 1779 in Kingston near Lewes, Sussex.  The burial register records her name as Anne Bech.  Or she may have been buried on 23 February 1804 in Brighton, Sussex.  Before her marriage she had 2 daughters:

  1. Ann Highland was baptised on 26 May 1753 in Ringmer.  She may have been buried there on on 6 March 1755.

  2. Elizabeth Highland was baptised on 26 May 1753 in Ringmer.  She may have been the infant Elizabeth Highland who was buried on 1 August 1753 in Ringmer (most likely).  Or as Elizabeth Highlands she may have married Edward Medhurst on 15 July 1770 in Ringmer (less likely).  She did have a cousin Elizabeth Hyland born in 1752.

John Beck and Ann Hyland had 5 known children:

  1. Sarah Hiland Beck was baptised on 13 October 1754 in Kingston near Lewes.  She died in December 1820 in Kingston.

Sarah married Samuel Mockford by banns on 21 March 1773 in Kingston.  They were both then of Iford, Sussex.  The witnesses to the marriage were John Beck and Richard Geering.

Samuel was born in 1752 in Lewes and was the son of Peter Mockford (1721-1793) and Susanna Stephens.  He died in Lewes in 1839.  On 22 January 1786 in Kingston, Samuel was a witness to the marriage of Thomas Mockford of Southover and Mary Bartholomew of Iford.  He acted again as witness to the marriage of Thomas Martin from Hove and Jane Smith of Iford on 21 July 1794 in Kingston.

Samuel and Sarah had the following children:

    1. Anne Mockford was baptised on 3 October 1773 in Kingston.

    2. John Mockford was baptised on 18 February 1776 in Kingston.

John married Mary Lawrence by banns on 13 November 1796 in Rottingdean, Sussex.  He was then of the parish of St. Anne's in Lewes.

John and Mary had the following sons:

      1. Henry Mockford was baptised on 28 May 1797 in Kingston.

      2. John Mockford was baptised on 27 October 1799 in Kingston.  He died on 9 January 1878 in Ilford.  John married Ann, possibly Ann Hoade on 3 June 1821 in Brighton.  John was then a bachelor and Ann a spinster and they were both of West Blatchington.  Ann was born about 1800 in Steyning.  She died on 23 February 1873.

    3. Thomas Mockford was baptised on 2 August 1778 in Kingston.  He died on 9 September 1858 in Telscombe.

Thomas married Barbara Hobden by banns on 17 November 1802 in Telscombe.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Telscombe.

Barbara was born in May 1784 in Telscombe and was the daughter of John Hobden and Anne Verrall.  She died on 20 October 1860 in Newhaven.

Thomas and Barbara had the following children:

      1. Sophia Mockford was baptised on 22 April 1804 in Telscombe.  She may have married William Howell by banns on 8 March 1826 in Brighton.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Brighton.

      2. Sarah Mockford was baptised on 30 November 1806 in Telscombe.  She married John Bishop on 5 July 1828 in Telscombe.  She was then of Telscombe and he of Rottingdean.

      3. Thomas Mockford was born in 1811 in Telscombe.  He died in 1878.  Thomas married Mary Hunnisett by banns on 14 November 1832 in Telscombe.  He was then of Telscombe and she of Rottingdean.  Mary was born in 1815 in Hellingly and was the daughter of William Hunnisett.  She died on 11 July 1887 in Newhaven.

  2. Daniel Beck was baptised on 4 July 1756 in Kingston near Lewes.

  3. Mary Beck was baptised on 26 February 1758 in Kingston near Lewes.

Mary married George Stephens by licence dated 1 November 1776.  George was described as a yeoman of West Firle and he was a bachelor aged 21 and upwards.  Mary was also of West Firle and was a spinster aged 19 and upwards, and married with the consent of her father, named as John Back of Kingston, near Lewes, a Husbandman.  Surety for the licence was stood by George Stephens and John Back.

  4. John Beck was baptised on 24 January 1762 in Kingston, near Lewes.  He died aged 80 years and was buried on 22 September 1842 in Rodmell, Sussex.
