George BACK (1820-1900)
and Sarah Ann SHERLOCK (1823-1864)
and Sarah HOLLINGSBURY (1821-?)

George Back
married twice, firstly to Sarah Shearlock on 8 November 1841 at
St. Nicholas, Brighton. He was then a 21 year old bachelor and a
labourer of 3 Steal's Cottages, Brighton. Sarah was a 19 year old
spinster of 30 Western Road, Hove. The witnesses to their marriage were William
Palmer and Ann Back. George next
married Sarah Bricknell, widow on 8 October 1865 at St. Nicholas,
Brighton. He was then a 45 year old widower and labourer of 3
Brunswick Court. She was also 45 years old and of the same address.
The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Merser and Sarah Merser
(George's daughter and son-in-law). As Sarah Hollingsberry she
had previously married Thomas Bricknell on 25 April 1841 in Brighton.
(They were not my direct ancestors. George was the brother of my 3x
Great Grandmother, Ann Back.)
George Back
was baptised on 24 September 1820 at St. Nicholas, Brighton. At that
time his parents were of Church Street and his father was a labourer.
He was the son of
George Back
(1797-?) and
Ann Streeter
(1797-1879). George died aged 79 years in the
third quarter of 1900 in Brighton. When the 1841 census was recorded
he may have been 22 year old George Back, a labourer,
living with the family of 60 year old John Bamfield in
Stanmer, Sussex.
Sarah Ann Sherlock was baptised on 22 January 1823 at St. Nicholas,
Brighton. She was the daughter of William Sherlock and
Catherine Plummer. Sarah died
in 1864. Sarah
Hollingsbury was baptised on 21 October 1821 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.
She was the daughter of James Hollingsbury, a labourer,
and Grace Martin.
In 1851 the couple together with 2 of their children and Sarah's brother, 17
year old John Shearlock, a tailor, were living at 12
Gloucester Lane, Brighton. George was then a 30 year old bricklayer's
labourer and Sarah was a 28 year old charwoman. The family were living at 11
Gloucester Street, Brighton when the 1861
census was recorded. In 1881 George and Sarah were both
aged 60 and living at 35 Cambridge Street, Brighton. He was then a
general labourer and she a washerwoman.
George Back and
Sarah Ann Sherlock had 6 known children:

St. Nicholas Brighton. He was then a 32 year old bachelor and a

Sarah Burtenshaw. Thomas was baptised
on 20 October 1833 at St. Nicholas, Brighton and was the son
of William Mercer, a labourer, and Barbara Bartley
