Thomas AYLWIN (c1713-1777)

and Sarah POLING (c1728-1808)

 

Thomas Aylwin and Sarah Poling may have been my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 23 September 1753 in Empshott, Hampshire.

Thomas Aylwin may have been born about 1713 in Treyford, Sussex but his baptism was not recorded in the Treyford baptism register.  He was the son of Richard Aylwin (c1667-1735) and Elizabeth Read (c1672-1753).  He was buried on 27 August 1777 in Didling, Sussex.  Thomas was appointed the sole executor of the will of his brother Peter Ayling (1717-1771).  Thomas made his will on 15 August 1777 and it was proved on 19 November 1777.  In his will he mentioned his wife Sarah, 2 sons Thomas and Peter, 2 daughters Elizabeth and Mary, deceased brother Peter, 2 sisters Elizabeth Burton and Joanna Tribe and 3 unnamed daughters of Richard Tribe.

Sarah Poling's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She probably died as an 80 year old widow and was buried on 5 November 1808 in Treyford cum Didling.

 

Thomas Aylwin and Sarah Poling had 5 known children:

  1. Thomas Aylwin was baptised on 21 December 1753 in Treyford cum Didling.  He was buried on 17 December 1819.  Thomas was appointed the sole executor of his father's will.

    Thomas married Mary Caplin by banns on 1 December 1778 in Treyford cum Didling.

    Mary may have died aged 78 years in Treyford and have been buried on 26 March 1840 or she may have died aged 83 in Didling and have been buried on 21 January 1843.  Both burials were recorded in the Treyford cum Didling burial register.  I think it more likely she died in Didling.

    Thomas and Mary had the following children:

    1. Mary Aylwin was baptised on 16 January 1780 in Treyford cum Didling.

    2. Elizabeth Aywin was baptised on 14 September 1781 in Treyford cum Didling.  She died in 1802.

      As Elizabeth Ayling she married William Durman by licence on 1 July 1800 in Treyford cum Didling.  She was then a spinster of Didling and he a bachelor of Treyford.  Her father was named as Thomas Ayling in the marriage register.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Durman and Mary Aylwin.

      William and Elizabeth had the following son:

      1. William Durman was baptised on 14 June 1801 in Treyford cum Didling.  The baptism register noted that he was from Treyford.

    3. Thomas Aylwin was baptised on 16 January 1783 in Treyford cum Didling.

    4. Richard Aylwin was baptised on 1 October 1784 in Treyford cum Didling.

    5. Anna Aylwin was baptised on 19 June 1786 in Treyford cum Didling.

    6. Jane Ayling was baptised on 13 April 1788 in Treyford cum Didling.

    7. Robert Aylwin was baptised on 3 February 1791 in Treyford cum Didling.

    8. William Aylwin was born in Didling and his baptism was recorded in the Treyford and Didling register, sometime between July 1799 and July 1800.

    9. James Ayling was baptised on 5 July 1801 in Treyford cum Didling.

  2. Elizabeth Aylwin was baptised on 1 July 1755 in Treyford cum Didling.  She was mentioned in her father's will.

    Elizabeth had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Sarah Aylwin was born in Didling and baptised on 22 September 1776 in Treyford cum Didling.

  3. Sarah Aylwin was baptised on 19 April 1757 in Treyford cum Didling.  She may have been buried on 10 July 1757 in Treyford cum Didling.

  4. Peter Aylwin, my possible 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 6 August 1758 in Treyford cum Didling.  The names of his parents were not recorded in the baptism register.  He married Mary Enticknap in 1781.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Mary Aylwin was baptised on 12 December 1760 in Treyford cum Didling.  The names of her parents were not recorded in the baptism register.  She was mentioned his her father's will.
