David
Ashdown and Hope Norman married on 20 July 1821 in
Westmeston, Sussex. (They were not my direct ancestors.)
David
Ashdown was born about 1798 in Wivelsfield or Ditchling, Sussex.
He died in 1866 in Ditchling.
Hope Norman
was baptised on 27 July 1800 in Westmeston, Sussex. She was the
daughter of Allen Norman (c1761-?) and Mary Parks
(c1768-?). She in 1890 in Wivelsfield.
The 1841 census
recorded that the couple and 7 children were living on Ditchling Common.
David was a 45 year old agricultural labourer and Hope was 40.
In 1851 the couple
were living in Ditchling along with 6 children (William, Hannah, Caroline,
Jesse, Susan and Richard). David was a 53 year old agricultural
labourer from Wivelsfield and Hope was 50 and from Westmeston.
At the time of the
1861 census the couple and 2 daughters (Hannah and Susan) were living on
Ditchling Common. David was a 63 year old agricultural labourer and
Hope was 62. He gave his place of birth as Ditchling and she as
Westmeston.
David Ashdown and Hope Norman had

old in 1841.

William Ashdown was born about 1832. He was 9 years
old in 1841. In 1851 he was an unmarried 21 year old agricultural
labourer.

Frances Ashdown was born about 1833. She was 8
years old in 1841.

Hannah Ashdown was born about 1835. She was 6 years
old in 1841. In 1851 she was 16 years old. When the 1861
census was recorded she was an unmarried 26 year old dressmaker.

Caroline Ashdown was baptised on 23 July 1837 in
Ditchling. She was 4 years old in 1841. In 1851 she was 13
years old.

Jesse Ashdown was baptised on 26 April 1840 in Ditchling.
He was a year old at the time of the 1841 census. In 1851 he was
an 11 year old scholar.

Susan Ashdown was born about 1844 in Ditchling. She
was a 7 year old scholar in 1851. In 1861 she was an 18 year old
house servant.

Richard Ashdown was born about 1846 in Ditchling.
He was 5 years old in 1851.
