William ASHBY (c1700-?)

and Ann DUDDING (1699-1784)

 

William Ashby and Ann Dudding may have been my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 3 July 1724 at St. Anne's in Lewes, Sussex.

William Ashbyís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  (See below for possible parents.)

Anne Dudden was baptised on 23 August 1699 in Brighton, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Thomas Dudding (1655-?) and Katherine Bramman.  She was buried on 10 July 1784 in Brighton.  The burial register noted that she was an 88 year old widow.

 

William Ashby and Ann Dudding had 4 known children:

  1. Mary Ashby, my possible 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 5 November 1724 in Brighton.  She married 5 306 Richard Spicer in 1746.  (They have their own page.)

  2. William Ashby was baptised on 14 August 1726 in Brighton and buried there on 25 May 1740.  The burial register noted that he was the son of William Ashby.

  3. Agnes Ashby was baptised on 3 March 1727/8 in Brighton.

  4. Ann Ashby was baptised on 2 October 1730 in Brighton and buried there on 13 October 1730.  The burial register noted that she was the daughter of William Ashby.

 

 

The following are some Ashby families with children born about the same time as William:

 

John Ashby married Lydia Smith on 28 April 1682 in Burwash, Sussex.  They had 3 known children:

  1. John Ashby was baptised on 4 April 1682 in Rotherfield.

  2. Thomas Ashby was baptised on 18 October 1685 in Waldron, Sussex.

  3. Lydia Ashby was baptised on 15 April 1688 in Waldron.  She married John Turner on 22 June 1708 in Dallington, Sussex.

John senior died in 1733 and made a will.  He did not mention a son William in that document.

 

Thomas Ashbee married Elizabeth Harris on 29 October 1682 in Frant, Sussex.  He was then of Rotherfield.  They had 3 known children:

  1. Thomas Ashby was baptised on 14 October 1683 in Rotherfield.

  2. Elizabeth Ashby was baptised on 17 April 1687 in Rotherfield.

  3. Mary Ashby was baptised on 15 June 1690 in Rotherfield.

 

Richard Ashby married Elizabeth sometime before or about 1685.    They had 4 known children:

  1. Mary Ashby was baptised on 8 December 1685 in Newhaven, Sussex.

  2. M.C. Ashby (daughter) was baptised on 12 December 1686 in Newhaven.

  3. Sarah Ashby was baptised on 8 April 1688 in Newhaven and died as an infant.

  4. Anne Ashby was baptised on 8 April 1688 in Newhaven and died as an infant.

A Richard Ashby married Elizabeth Little on 16 August 1685 in Cranbrook, Kent.

 

John Ashby married Ann Durrant by licence on 12 November 1685 in Wadhurst, Sussex.  They had 1 known child:

  1. Alice and/or Avice Ashby was baptised on 5 July 1695 in Rotherfield.

 

Richard Ashby married Mary sometime before or about 1686.  They had 10 known children:

  1. Richard Ashby was baptised on 27 December 1686 in Mayfield and probably died as an infant.

  2. Richard Ashby was baptised on 27 December 1689 in Mayfield and was buried there in April 1690.

  3. John Ashby was baptised on 25 September 1692 in Mayfield.  He was buried there on 18 September 1768.

  4. Richard Ashby was baptised on 1 December 1695.

  5. Reuben Ashby was baptised on 6 November 1698 in Mayfield and probably died as an infant.

  6. Mary Ashby was baptised on 9 March 1700 in Mayfield and died in about 1708.

  7. Soloman Ashby was born in about 1702 and died in 1703 in Mayfield.

  8. Reuben Ashby was baptised on 28 October 1703 in Mayfield.  He died in January 1784.  He married Ann Turnis on 9 July 1722 in Mayfield.

  9. Elizabeth Ashby was baptised on 11 September 1706 in Mayfield.

  10. Mary Ashby was born in 1709 in Mayfield.

 

William Ashbey married Ann Quinnell on 7 August 1687 in Rotherfield.  They had 2 known children:

  1. Mary Ashby was baptised on 2 December 1688 in Rotherfield.

  2. William Ashby was baptised on 23 March 1689 in Rotherfield.  He died in 1751.

 

John Ashbey married Elizabeth Gyles on 4 October 1687 in Rotherfield.  They had 3 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Ashbey was baptised on 15 May 1687 in Rotherfield and probably died as an infant.

  2. Dorcas Ashbey was baptised on 15 March 1690/1 in Rotherfield.

  3. Elizabeth Ashbey was baptised on 29 January 1692/3 in Rotherfield.

 

Abraham Ashbey married Elizabeth Peckham or Portham on 21 June 1689 in Rotherfield.  He was then of Rotherfield and she of Mayfield.

 

William Ashbe married Ann Simons on 13 April 1697 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.  He was then a day labourer of Lindfield and she of Horsted Keynes.

 

It must also be considered, that William Ashby born circa 1700, may have been born illegitimate.

 

 

John Ashby may have been born about 1560.  He was the father of:

  1. John Ashby was born in 1591/2 in Rotherfield.  He married Jone Hilder.

  2. Elizabeth Ashby was in 1596 in Rotherfield.  She married William Addams in 1620 in Withyham.  They had the following children:

    1. Anne Adams was baptised on 25 November 1621 in Rotherfield.  Ann married Will Brooker on 21 August 1640 in Rotherfield.  They had the following daughter:

      1. Susannah Brooker was baptised on 13 September 1647 in Rotherfield.  She married William Harmer on 28 May 1672 in Heathfield.  He was baptised on 23 March 1650/1 in Heathfield, and was the son of William Harmer and Maria Crouch.

    2. William Adams was born in 1623 in Rotherfield.

  3. Agnes Ashby was born in 1600 in Rotherfield.

  4. Mary Ashby was born in 1603 in Rotherfield.  She married Edward Lucas in 1623 in Rotherfield.

  5. Alice Ashby was baptised on 6 July 1606 in Frant.  She married William Haysellden in 1634.  (They have their own page.)
