John ALFREY (1669-?)

and Dorcas PETER (c1670-1706)

and Mary MATHEW (c1686-1730)

St. Mary's, Slaugham, circa 1910 - from Alfry and Dorcas Peter were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on  23 January 1690/1 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Slaugham, Sussex.  John Alfree next married Mary Mathew on 27 May 1707 in Pyecombe, Sussex.

John Alfrey may have been baptised on 27 January 1665/6 in Balcombe, Sussex as the son John Alfrey, and/or on 25 March 1669 in East Grinstead, Sussex as the son of John Alfrey and Rebecca Tasker.  Either he or his son was buried on 8 December 1751 in Pyecombe.

Dorcas Peterís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died 1706 in Pyecombe.

Mary Mathew's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  The IGI states she was born about 1686.  She was buried on 30 December 1730 in Pyecombe.  (I have a 6x great grandfather named James Matthews who was born 1682 in Bolney, Sussex, but as yet I don't know if he and Mary were related in anyway.)

John Alfrey and Dorcas Peter had 3 known children:

  1. 5 89 John Alfrey, my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 16 May 1691 in Slaugham.  He married Ann Wood in 1720 as his first wife and then 5 174 Elizabeth Davis in 1727.  (They have their own page.)

  2. William Alfrey was baptised on 27 March 1694 in Pyecombe.  He probably died young.

  3. Dorcas Alfrey was baptised on 19 October 1696 in Pyecombe.  She married Thomas Crouch on 10 April 1729 in Chiddingly, Sussex.  They had 2 known children:

    1. Sarah Crouch was baptised on 12 April 1730 in Herstmonceux, Sussex.

    2. William Crouch was baptised on 2 April 1732 in Herstmonceux.

Did Dorcas die before 1734 as Thomas and Ann had a son John baptised in Herstmonceux on 21 July 1734?

John Alfrey and Mary Mathew had 5 known children:

  1. 5 89 Mary Alfrey was baptised on 9/16 October 1709 in Pyecombe.  She married William Gray on 1 May 1729 in Twineham, Sussex.  William and Mary had 7 known children:

    1. Rebecca Grey was baptised on 27 February 1731 in Newtimber, Sussex and probably died young.

    2. Sarah Gray was baptised on 3/23 December 1733 in Newtimber.

    3. William Gray was baptised on 6 January 1735/6 in Newtimber.

    4. Ann Grey was baptised on 18 December 1737 in Newtimber.

    5. Mary Gray was baptised on 12 October 1740 in Newtimber.

    6. Edward Gray was baptised on 23 May 1745 in Newtimber.

    7. Rebeccah Gray was baptised on 19 January 1746/7 in Newtimber.

  2. Richard Alfrey was baptised on 3 March 1710 in Poynings, Sussex, and buried on 22 June 1711.

  3. Diana Alfrey was baptised on 23 June 1713 in Poynings.

  4. Sarah Alfrey was baptised on 13 November 1716 in Poynings.

  5. William Alfrey was baptised on 14 June 1723 and/or 14 January 1724 in Pyecombe.

Were John and Mary the parents of:

  1. Rebecca Alfrey married Richard Brown on 5 February 1745 in Ditchling or Hangleton, Sussex.
